The dynamics of the layer-displacement fluctuations in smectic membranes have been studied by x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS). We report transitions from an oscillatory damping regime to simple exponential decay of the fluctuations, both as a function of membrane thickness and upon changing from specular to off-specular scattering. This behavior is in agreement with recent theories. Employing avalanche photodiode detectors and the uniform filling mode of the synchrotron storage ring, the fast limits of XPCS have been explored down to 50 ns.

Highly-dense small-feature-size nanopatterns and nanoporous membranes are important in advanced microelectronics, nanofiltration, and biomimic device manufacturing. Here, we report the synthesis and self-assembly of a series of high-interaction-parameter (high-χ) silicon-containing hierarchical block copolymers (BCPs) with cross-linkable subordering chalcone motifs, which possess both an intrinsic native etching contrast for nanofabrication and cross-linkability under ultraviolet light for generating free-standing membranes. BCPs with a volume fraction of chalcone block of 55-74% form ordered primary nanostructures with period 15-22 nm including lamellae, double gyroid, hexagonally packed cylinders, and body-centered cubic spheres of the minority Si-containing block.

The osmotic energy, an abundant renewable energy source, can be directly converted to electricity by nanofluidic devices with ion-selective membranes. 2D nanochannels constructed by nanosheets possess abundant lateral interfacial ion-exchange sites and exhibit great superiority in nanofluidic devices. However, the most accessible orientation of the 2D nanochannels is parallel to the membrane surface, undoubtedly resulting in the conductivity loss.

The self-assembly of organic amphiphilic species into various aggregates such as spherical or elongated micelles and cylinders up to the formation of lyotropic hexagonal or lamellar phases results from cooperative processes orchestrated by the hydrophobic effect, while those involving ionic inorganic polynuclear entities and nonionic organic components are still intriguing. Herein, we report on the supramolecular behavior of giant toroidal molybdenum blue-type polyoxometalate, namely, the {Mo} species in the presence of n-octyl-β-glucoside (C8G1), widely used as a surfactant in biochemistry. Structural investigations were carried out using a set of complementary multiscale methods including single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis supported by molecular modeling, small-angle X-ray scattering and cryo-TEM observations.

This work presents the synthesis and self-organization of the calamitic fluorinated mesogen, 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-2-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-4-iodobutoxy)ethanesulfonic acid, a potential model for perfluorosulfonic acid membranes (PFSA). The compound is derived in three steps from 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-2-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-2-iodoethoxy)ethanesulfonyl fluoride, achieving a 78% overall yield. The resulting compound exhibits intricate thermal behavior.

Aquatic functional liquid crystals, which are ordered molecular assemblies that work in water environment, are described in this review. Aquatic functional liquid crystals are liquid-crystalline (LC) materials interacting water molecules or aquatic environment. They include aquatic lyotropic liquid crystals and LC based materials that have aquatic interfaces, for example, nanoporous water treatment membranes that are solids preserving LC order.
