Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis has been applied to the identification of four mussels species: Mytilus edulis, Mytilus chilensis, Mytilus galloprovincialis, and Perna canaliculus. Amplifications of DNA from mussel were carried out using random primers. The most distinctive bands were then isolated, cloned, and sequenced to design specific primers. Finally, DNA from different mussels was amplified with these specific primers, and results allow genetic identification of M. galloprovincialis from the rest of the mussel species.

Mussels, particularly Perna viridis, are vital sentinel species for toxicology and biomonitoring in environmental health. This species plays a crucial role in aquaculture and significantly impacts the fisheries sector. Despite the ecological and economic importance of this species, its omics resources are still scarce.

Biofouling is a common phenomenon caused by waterborne organisms such as bacteria, diatoms, mussels, barnacles, algae, etc., accumulating on the surfaces of engineering structures submerged under water. This leads to corrosion of such surfaces and decreases their moving efficiency.

The asymmetric total synthesis of isolinearol, a -dolastane-type diterpenoid that inhibits byssal thread formation by mussels, has been achieved. In the synthesis, the key features include an intramolecular reductive nucleophilic addition using a low-valence titanium species and the direct installation of a ketone side chain. We evaluated their biological activities using the synthetic samples and found the novel inhibitory molecules with a simplified structure exhibit high inhibitory activities against byssus formation and low toxicities.

Consuming raw or undercooked mussels can lead to gastroenteritis and septicemia due to contamination. This study analyzed the prevalence, density, species diversity, and molecular traits of spp. in 48 fresh raw wild mussels (FRMs) and 48 ready-to-eat stuffed mussels (RTE-SMs) through genome analysis, assessing health risks.

China has recently launched extensive marine ranching projects, highlighting the need for scientific evaluation of ecosystem structure and function to guide their development. This study established two energy flow models and an evaluation index system to assess the structure, function, carrying capacity, and ecological status of both a marine ranching ecosystem and a nearby control site in the Beibu Gulf. The results show that the ranching ecosystem outperformed the control ecosystem in terms of food chain length, system size, and ecological carrying capacity of economically important species.
