Published: April 2002

The open reading frame (ORF) of the gene for the precursor of the octapeptide Red Pigment Concentrating Hormone (RPCH) from the blue crab Callinectes sapidus was cloned by PCR with oligonucleotides targeted to the initiation and the end of the translation coding sequences. A 272 bp intron was characterized between nucleotides 343 and 344 of the reported cDNA, present in the region coding for the last amino acids of the precursor related peptide of RPCH. The intron genomic structure here described is similar to that reported for the gene coding for the Adipokinetic Hormone (AKH) of the grasshopper Schistocerca nitans.

Electronic address:

Theacrine, a purine alkaloid with pharmacological effects such as calming and anti-depressive activities, is biosynthesized through a key rate-limiting enzyme, caffeine oxidase. Despite its importance, the caffeine oxidase gene (CsCDH) in Camellia sinensis has not been cloned to date. We successfully isolated the full-length CsCDH cDNA, which contains a 501-bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 166-amino-acid protein with a calculated molecular weight of 18.

Introduction: Home care workers (HCWs) are paid caregivers who provide support to patients with chronic conditions and functional limitations. Additionally, they provide emotional support to patients and familial support. Although several qualitative studies have been conducted on HCWs, they focused more on studying prevalently the lived experiences about the workplace violence, the end of life, stressor and resilience, during the COVID-19 pandemic or focused more in dementia and heart failure, but not on feelings and working conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The mammalian mitochondrial protein synthesis system is responsible for synthesizing 13 crucial subunits for energy production, but the exact role of IF-3mt in translation initiation is still unclear.
  • Researchers created a mitochondrial translation system to explore IF-3mt's proofreading abilities, revealing it helps distinguish between different start codons for more accurate protein synthesis.
  • The findings indicate that IF-3mt not only supports initiation from standard AUG start codons but can also facilitate initiation from non-AUG codons like AUA, highlighting its adaptability in working with leaderless mRNAs.

Mycobacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect bacteria of the Mycobacterium genus. A substantial collection of mycobacteriophages has been isolated and characterized, offering valuable insights into their diversity and evolution. This collection also holds significant potential for therapeutic applications, particularly as an alternative to antibiotics in combating drug-resistant bacterial strains.
