Background: Cancer chemotherapy in humans based on metal complexes started at the clinical level in the late 1970s with the use of cisplatin, which forms intra-strand cross-links with DNA.
Methods: Two new platinum complexes of cis-geometry with the amino acids inosine (ino) and l-alanine (ala), Pt(ino)2Cl2 and cis-[Pt(NH3)2(ala)](NO3), respectively, were synthesized and pure samples were obtained by means of flash chromatography. These complexes were tested on benzo(a)pyrene-induced tumours in Wistar rats to detect their antitumour and toxic effects.
Results: There was a statistically significant prolongation of the mean survival time of the animals in the two groups tested (272 +/- 18 days and 246 +/- 26 days, respectively) compared to the control group (195 +/- 22 days) (P < 0.001). Toxic effects included a decrease in leucocyte cell count, mild haemolysis, mild haematuria, mild hepatotoxicity, elevated body temperature and hair loss. All of these effects were reversible after drug discontinuation.
Conclusions: The two new platinum complexes described here appear to have an effective antitumour activity without severe toxicity when tested on Wistar rats.

Implantable drug delivery systems are crucial for achieving sustained delivery of active compounds to specific sites or systemic circulation. In this study, a novel reservoir-type implant combining a biodegradable rate-controlling membrane with a drug-containing core prepared using direct compression techniques is developed. The membrane is composed of poly(caprolactone) (PCL), and risperidone (RIS) served as the model drug.

Ethnomedicine exhibits potential in developing affordable effective antidiabetic agents. This work aimed to explore the antidiabetic properties of latex extract both in vivo, utilizing alloxan-induced diabetic rats, and in vitro, through -amylase enzyme testing. Additionally, it sought to formulate optimal effervescent granules derived from the extract.

In the quest for an ideal wound healing material, human amniotic membrane (AM), tilapia skin collagen (TSC), and Centella asiatica (CA) have been studied separately for their healing potential. In this study, we formulated AM, TSC, and CA gel and studied their competency and wound healing efficacy in vivo. Gel was formulated using AM, TSC, CA, Carbopol 934, acrylic acid, glycerine, and triethanolamine and physicochemical properties e.

This study aimed to determine the protective role of boric acid in a pregnant rat model of high fructose corn syrup consumption. Consumption of high fructose corn syrup has been associated with adverse health outcomes in humans and animals. Twenty-eight healthy female Wistar albino rats (250-300 g weight and 16-24 weeks old) were randomly distributed into four equal groups (n = 7): Control, Boric acid (BA), High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), HFCS + BA.
