Published: March 2002

Introduction: Interventions against osteoporosis may reduce the incidence of fractures in patients and costs to society, but they also incur additional expenditure and thus call for economic evaluation. The aim of this paper was to evaluate existing literature by applying cost-effectiveness (CEA) and cost-utility analyses (CUA) to pharmacological treatment of osteoporosis.

Material And Methods: MEDLINE and the reference lists of relevant papers were searched to identify original papers on the subject. Studies were included if they were peer reviewed, written in English or a Scandinavian language, and reported CEA or CUA for a specified pharmacological intervention.

Results: Of the 37 identified studies, 16 met the inclusion criteria (ten CUA and six CEA), and 21 studies were excluded. Of the studies examined, 13 studies concerned hormone replacement therapy (HRT), four bisphosphonate, four calcitonin, and four calcium supplementation and/or vitamin D treatment. All were based on simulations of the long-term effects of the intervention with respect to cost and effect. However, the studies varied widely in patient selection and assumptions about duration and effectiveness of intervention, assessment of quality of life, and mortality following hip fracture.

Discussion: The published studies rely on limited empirical data as regards the effect of treatment, costs, and adverse effects. Several, however, indicate that some interventions may be cost-effective in high-risk groups.

Manuka essential oil has long been used in traditional medicine, though the effects of the oil on cancer cells have limited studies. The goal of this project was to treat cancer cell lines with manuka essential oil at different concentrations and to ascertain the effects on the cell proliferation of normal fibroblast (CUA-4) and on fibrosarcoma (HT-1080) cells. Cell lines were grown on 24-well plates, and subconfluent cultures were treated with varying concentrations of manuka oil for 24 h.

A review of possible biomarkers for opioid tolerance.

Forensic Sci Int

October 2024

Department of Forensic Medicine, Aarhus University, Denmark; Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark. Electronic address:

Knowledge of opioid tolerance in a deceased person is important for distinguishing between therapeutic and toxic opioid concentrations for that particular individual when interpreting postmortem toxicological results. However, no biomarkers for opioid tolerance are currently available. This review aimed to study the existing literature on mechanisms or changes in signaling pathways related to chronic opioid use, which could be relevant for further studies to identify biomarkers for opioid tolerance.

Article Synopsis
  • Dietary doses of copper, in combination with fructose, impact metabolic dysfunction and contribute to MASLD through the gut-liver axis.
  • A study on rats identified 2847 differentially expressed proteins in the ileum, highlighting specific pathways affected by varying copper levels and fructose.
  • Key findings indicate that different copper-fructose diets uniquely alter pathways related to oxidative stress, arachidonic acid metabolism, and gut barrier integrity, which are crucial for understanding MASLD development.

Analysis of evidence on nutraceutical interventions for Peyronie's disease: a guideline-based critical review.

Introduction: The management of Peyronie's disease (PD) is a challenge for the clinician. Despite the lack of etiologic therapy, different nonsurgical approaches have often been empirically proposed. The most used treatment is based on nutraceutical drugs with antioxidant activity, although such an intervention remains controversial.

CCl toxicity is a fatal condition that can cause numerous organ dysfunctions. We evaluated and compared the protective effects of cuminaldehyde (CuA), thymoquinone (TQ), and gallic acid (GA) on CCl-induced pulmonary and renal toxicity in rats. The impacts of these compounds on CCl-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and morphological alterations were examined.
