Background: Semi-aquatic mammals represent a transitional phase in the evolutionary spectrum between terrestrial and aquatic mammals. The sense of balance is crucial for mammalian locomotion, and in semi-aquatic mammals, the structural foundation of this sense (the vestibular system) shows distinct morphological adaptations to both aquatic and terrestrial environments compared to their terrestrial counterparts. Despite this, the precise molecular mechanisms driving these adaptations remain elusive.

This study aimed to compare the effects of cochlear implantation(CI) on vestibular function in patients with large vestibular aqueduct syndrome(LVAS) and in patients with extremely severe deafness with normal inner ear structure. A total of 28 LVAS patients and 28 patients with normal inner ear structure who suffered from extremely severe deafness were selected. The parameters of caloric tests, bone conduction evoked cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials(cVEMP), bone conduction evoked ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials(oVEMP) and video head impulse tests(v-HIT) were compared between the two groups before and after CI.

Background: While cardiovascular and neurological diseases induced by obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) hypoxia are well established, the association between neuro-otological diseases and OSAS is not entirely understood. Vestibular and audiological tests have been used to evaluate the degeneration of neurons in the brainstem caused by recurrent hypoxia.
Purpose: Evaluation of the vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test findings applied to detect the possible influence on the vestibular reflex arc due to hypoxia in patients diagnosed with OSAS using Activity-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) and Berg Balance Scale (BBS) scales determination of scores.

The current article presents and explains methods for clinical examination of the vestibular system that have been used from the 1950s to the present day. It spans 230 years of clinical vestibular research, giving the reader a better overview and filling in the gaps in the history. Whilst only limited topographic regions could be examined in the early years, it is nowadays possible to collect objective results independently of patient compliance.
