Purpose: By use of flow cytometry (FCM), lymphocyte subsets were evaluated with fluorochrome-labeled monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs). Recent fluorescein angiography (FA) produces temporary elevation of serum background fluorescence at certain wavelengths of light, producing falsely decreased lymphocyte subset quantitations. The authors evaluated the duration of this effect on one subset of lymphocytes after FA.

Methods: CD4 counts were determined by FCM before and 10 minutes, 1, 6, and 24 hours after injection of fluorescein dye in 12 patients. The MoAbs used were directly conjugated to fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) or phycoerythrin (PE).

Results: Using FITC-labeled MoAbs, falsely decreased CD4 counts occurred in all patients at 10 minutes and in all but one patient 1 hour after injection. Return to baseline levels occurred in 50% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.21, 0.79) by 6 hours and in 75% (95% CI, 0.43, 0.95] by 24 hours. No such effect was observed using PE-labeled MoAbs.

Conclusions: Falsely decreased CD4 values as determined by FCM were present immediately after FA in all 12 patients and persisted 24 hours in some patients when FITC-labeled MoAbs were used. CD4 evaluation should be delayed in patients who have undergone recent FA or the analysis should be performed with PE-labeled MoAbs.

Plastic pollution, particularly microplastics (MPs), poses a significant global threat to ecosystems and human health, necessitating innovative remediation strategies. Biocompatible and biodegradable plastic-binding peptides (PBPs) offer a potential solution through targeted adsorption and subsequent MP detection or removal from the environment. A challenge in discovering plastic-binding peptides is the vast combinatorial space of possible peptides (, over 10 for 12-mer peptides), which far exceeds the sample sizes typically reachable by experiments or biophysics-based computational methods.

An 86-year-old male patient developed paresthesia in both hands, and six months later, pancytopenia was noted. He was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome following bone marrow aspiration. Despite high serum vitamin B12 level, elevated level of serum homocysteine, positive anti-intrinsic factor antibody, and T-weighted hyperintense lesions on spinal cord MRI led to a diagnosis of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China; Shenzhen Research Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China. Electronic address:

Objective: First trimester cervical angles for the prediction of spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) remains unclear. The objective is to explore the potential value of first trimester cervical angles for the prediction of sPTB.

Study Design: This was a secondary analysis of data derived from a prospective cohort study for sPTB screening in singleton pregnancies at 11 + 0-13 + 6 weeks in women attending routine Down's syndrome screening at Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong SAR, between June 2018 and July 2020.

Causal associations between immune cells and psychiatric disorders: a bidirectional mendelian randomization analysis.

Extensive researches illuminate a potential interplay between immune traits and psychiatric disorders. However, whether there is the causal relationship between the two remains an unresolved question. We conducted a two-sample bidirectional mendelian randomization by utilizing summary data of 731 immune cell traits from genome-wide association studies (GCST90001391-GCST90002121)) and 11 psychiatric disorders including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), bipolar disorder (BIP), anorexia nervosa (AN), major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome (TS), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia (SCZ), and substance use disorders (cannabis) (SUD) from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC).

Background: The reliability of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in patients with initially node-positive breast cancer is still controversial. This meta-analysis is conducted to investigate the feasibility and accuracy of SLNB after NACT in patients with initially positive axillary nodes.

Methods: We conducted a literature search using Medline, PubMed, Embase, Central, and SCOPUS up until April 2021 for studies on the performance of SLNB following NACT.
