Preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) diagnosis is made through visualization of amniotic fluid (pooling), nitrizine testing, sonographic low amniotic fluid, and microscopic detection of amniotic fluid arborization (ferning). Data exits on the specificity and sensitivity of ferning detection but has not focused on the second trimester. Our objective is to evaluate the presence of ferning in transvaginally collected amniotic fluid in pregnancies with known second trimester PPROM to determine if there is a difference in ferning based on gestational age and sample drying time.

Objective: To determine outcomes at birth and postnatal sequelae of congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection following maternal primary infection in the first trimester with normal fetal brain imaging at midgestation.

Methods: A retrospective, single-center cohort study was conducted, including all cases of proven cCMV infection following maternal primary infection in the first trimester from 2014 until 2021 and normal fetal brain imaging before 22 weeks of gestation. All pregnancies were followed according to our protocol, which offers amniocentesis at least 8 weeks after the onset of infection, serial ultrasound scans, and a fetal MRI in the third trimester.

Second trimester cervical length screening, in a low-risk European population.

J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med

December 2025

Obstetrics Unit, Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences for Mothers, Children and Adults, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena, Italy.

Purpose: The aim of this work is to assess cervical length (CL) distribution in a low-risk population in order to evaluate the applicability of a possible universal CL screening in the second trimester, aimed at preventing preterm birth (PTB).

Methods: In a multicentric, prospective cohort study, singleton pregnant women attending second trimester anatomy scan between 18 + 0 to 22 + 6 weeks of gestation were eligible. Teenage pregnancy and women with previous PTB were excluded.

Article Synopsis
  • * A 32-year-old woman undergoing assisted reproductive technology showed two embryos with regular heartbeats and tightly entangled umbilical cords at 8.5 weeks gestation, identified through various ultrasound techniques.
  • * The findings suggest that UCE can be diagnosed as early as eight weeks of gestation, but may indicate a poor prognosis for the pregnancy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to improve the diagnosis of congenital right aortic arch (RAA) and double aortic arch (DAA) in fetuses, as traditional echography methods are often insufficient, impacting clinical management and long-term outcomes.
  • - From over 414,000 pregnant women scanned between 2014 and 2022, 332 cases were identified with either RAA or DAA, with a focus on enhancing diagnostic accuracy through a combination of multiple echocardiographic views alongside advanced imaging techniques.
  • - The results highlighted that traditional views like the three-vessel and trachea (3VT) view were inadequate for certain cases of RAA, particularly mirror RAA, revealing an accuracy of 88.
