The myosin heavy chain (MHC) and myosin light chain (MLC) isoforms in skeletal muscle of Rana pipiens have been well characterized. We measured the force-velocity (F-V) properties of single intact fast-twitch fibers from R. pipiens that contained MHC types 1 or 2 (MHC1 or MHC2) or coexpressed MHC1 and MHC2 isoforms. Velocities were measured between two surface markers that spanned most of the fiber length. MHC and MLC isoform content was quantified after mechanics analysis by SDS-PAGE. Maximal shortening velocity (V(max)) and velocity at half-maximal tension (V(P 50)) increased with percentage of MHC1 (%MHC1). Maximal specific tension (P(o)/CSA, where P(o) is isometric tension and CSA is fiber cross-sectional area) and maximal mechanical power (W(max)) also increased with %MHC1. MHC concentration was not significantly correlated with %MHC1, indicating that the influence of %MHC1 on P(o)/CSA and W(max) was due to intrinsic differences between MHC isoforms and not to concentration. The MLC3-to-MLC1 ratio was not significantly correlated with V(max), V(P 50), P(o)/CSA, or W(max). These data demonstrate the powerful relationship between MHC isoforms and F-V properties of the two most common R. pipiens fiber types.

Submerged aquatic vegetation (macrophytes) can provide prey with refuges from predators and may perform a similar role for interactions with other natural enemies such as parasites. This could occur by interfering with the ability of free-swimming infectious parasite stages to locate or move towards hosts, reducing infections. Alternatively, infections may increase if macrophytes reduce host anti-parasite behaviours such as detection or evasion.

The detection of severe limb malformations in metamorphosing northern leopard frogs () from a Colorado pond in August 2022 prompted questions about the cause(s) and concern over the implications. Northern leopard frogs, which are a Tier 1 Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Colorado, have declined over much of their range in the state, particularly along the Front Range. Although malformations in amphibians have been reported in other parts of the USA, they are rare in Colorado, and the current case represents the most severe hotspot reported in the state for over 70 years.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play a fundamental role in the innate defense against microbial pathogens, as well as other immune and non-immune functions. Their role in amphibian skin defense against the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is exemplified by experiments in which depletion of host's stored AMPs increases mortality from infection. Yet, the question remains whether there are generalizable patterns of negative or positive correlations between stored AMP defenses and the probability of infection or infection intensity across populations and species.
