Published: March 2002

The most successful quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) have been developed by separating toxicants by their mechanisms of action (MOAs). However, since the activity of a chemical compound on an organism is dependent upon several physical, chemical and biological factors, among which interactions may also exist, the MOA of a compound is not easily determined. In this study, the use of discriminant analysis and logistic regression in distinguishing between narcotic and reactive compounds was investigated. The discriminating variables included hydrophobicity (log(K(ow))) and electrophilicity descriptors (S(av)(N), E(HOMO), and E(LUMO)). Classification results showed that logistic regression gave a smaller total error rate compared to discriminant analysis. Since the value of the descriptors can be calculated, the classification methods can be used in predictive toxicology.

Four aliphatic amino acids-α-aminobutyric acid (AABA), β-aminobutyric acid (BABA), α-aminoisobutyric acid (AAIBA) and β-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA) were investigated in water as a solvent by two quantum chemical methods. B3LYP hybrid version of DFT was used for geometry optimization and a full vibrational analysis of neutral molecules, their cations and anions in the canonical and zwitterionic forms (6 forms for each species). Ab initio DLPNO-CCSD(T) method was applied in the geometry pre-optimized by B3LYP.

Context: Ionization and adsorption in gas discharge are similar to electrophilic and nucleophilic reactions. The molecular descriptors characterizing reactions such as electrostatic potential descriptors are useful in predicting the electrical strength of environmentally friendly gases. In this study, descriptors of 73 molecules are employed for correlation analysis with electrical strength.

Conventionally, gas sensors are studied based on functional materials, case by case, using experimental methods. In this study, 872 datasets with 34 features of doped oxides, extracted from the literature, were used to analyze the key features of gas-sensing reactions and understand gas-sensing mechanisms from a global perspective using a genetic algorithm-optimized artificial neural network. Shapley additive explanations were employed to determine the importance and relationships of the features.

The kinetics of the σ-complexation reactions of 3,5-dicyanothiophene with a series of cyclic secondary amines - has been studied in water and acetonitrile at 20 °C. Through the linear free energy relationship (LFER) log = s ( + ), the electrophilicity parameter of 3,5-dicyanothiophene has been determined and then integrated into the electrophilicity scale established by Mayr. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been employed to elucidate the reversal in reactivity order between piperidine and pyrrolidine observed in water.

The potential applicability of the C nanocage and its boron nitride-doped analogs (CBN and CBN) as pyrazinamide (PA) carriers was investigated using density functional theory. Geometry optimization and energy calculations were performed using the B3LYP functional and 6-31G(d) basis set. Besides, dispersion-corrected interaction energies were calculated at CAM (Coulomb attenuated method)-B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) and M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) levels of theory.
