To monitor the exposure of the Thai to pesticide residues in foods, the intake of pesticides based on the total diet approach has been studied in Thailand continually since 1989. Food items were chosen and their proportions of daily consumption were calculated from the national food consumption survey conducted by the Department of Health in 1986. Seventy-seven items of food including drinking water were classified into 12 groups according to their sources of contamination and the analytical methods used. Shopping lists and standard procedures for collecting samples and cooking were developed. Twelve food composites from each of the 4 regions were analyzed for nearly 100 pesticides. All analyses used multiresidue analytical methods, and the total daily dietary intakes of pesticide residues were estimated from the average amount of food consumed by Thais. Among 24 pesticides found in the 8 year study, DDT, dimethoate, methamidophos, and parathion methyl were found every year. However, dietary intakes of all pesticides were far below the established acceptable daily intake. In 1999, the study methodology was redesigned to accommodate the new national food consumption survey data.

Given the urge to accelerate the substitution of petrol-derived solvents not only in more traditional fields like pharmaceuticals, personal care, or electronics but also in innovative research processes, this work focuses on the utilisation of four biobased solvents as media for the enzymatic synthesis of aliphatic-aromatic polyesters. As building blocks, the lignin-derived diethyl-2,4-pyridinedicarboxylate was selected as the potentially biobased, aromatic component while more classical diols such as 1,4-butanediol and 1,8-octanediol were used as the aliphatic portion. Results show that among the tested green solvents (cyclohexanone, phenetole, anisole and eucalyptol), the most suitable medium for lipase B from Candida antarctica-catalysed polycondensation reactions was eucalyptol that allowed reach monomer conversions >95 % and number average molecular weights up to 3500 g·mol.

Modern psychometric evaluation of Thai WHOQOL-BREF and its shorter versions in patients undergoing warfarin in Thailand: Rasch analysis.

Sci Rep

September 2024

Division of Social and Administrative Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Burapha University, 169 Long-Hard Bangsaen Rd., Mueang, Chonburi, 20131, Thailand.

Rasch analysis was employed to investigate the psychometric properties of the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) and its shorter versions (EUROHIS-QOL-8 and WHOQOL-5) within the context of patients undergoing warfarin in Thailand. A group of 260 patients were recruited from three public hospitals and tasked with completing the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Rasch analysis showed that the WHOQOL-BREF, structured into four-domain subtests, achieved a commendable fit to the Rasch model (χ[16] = 12.

Placental transcriptome variation associated with season, location, and urinary prenatal pyrethroid metabolites of Thai farm-working women.

Environ Pollut

Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A study examines how prenatal exposure to pyrethroids, a type of pesticide, affects placental function and fetal development, particularly among pregnant women working in agriculture in Thailand.
  • Urinary metabolites from the mothers were measured throughout pregnancy, and RNA sequencing of placental tissue was conducted to identify gene expressions related to these exposures.
  • The results showed significant differences in gene expression based on the participants' residence and the season of birth, implicating pathways related to immune response and metabolism but not directly linking to individual pyrethroid metabolites.

Background: Strongyloides stercoralis is not endemic in Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ). However, approximately one third of Auckland residents are born in endemic countries. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology and management of strongyloidiasis in Auckland, with a focus on migrants from Pacific Island Countries and Territories.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are widespread worldwide, even reaching polar regions. Among POPs, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and their metabolites have been reported scarcely in the Antarctic environment. Here we report the levels of p,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, and o,p'-DDE in air and water samples collected during austral summer 2009.
