Any school of nursing, which is building upon a college-based teaching culture to create and maintain a viable research culture within a university, must build from within its own resources. This paper outlines a strategic approach to create a research culture in one such school. We describe the empowerment philosophy based on critical and feminist approaches that underpinned our strategy in transforming what was a teaching based college of advanced education culture to that of a university in which both research and teaching are required of its staff. A climate to facilitate change was created and a research support structure was put in place. The success of the strategies can be assessed by the increased participation in research activities, enhanced productivity and evidence of increasing confidence of staff.

Pediatric infections account for approximately one-third of all deaths in children under 5 globally. Lactoferrin (LF) supplementation has the potential to reduce infection-related morbidity due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of oral LF supplementation randomized controlled trials (RCT) in population under 18 years old.

The lymphatic vasculature plays critical roles in maintaining fluid homeostasis, transporting lipid, and facilitating immune surveillance. A growing body of work has identified lymphatic dysfunction as contributing to the severity of myriad diseases and to systemic inflammation, as well as modulating drug responses. Here, we review efforts to reconstruct lymphatic vessels in vitro toward establishing humanized, functional models to advance understanding of lymphatic biology and pathophysiology.

Mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) function modulates macrophage biology; however, mechanisms underlying mitochondria ETC control of macrophage immune responses are not fully understood. Here, we report that mutant mice with mitochondria ETC complex III (CIII)-deficient macrophages exhibit increased susceptibility to influenza A virus (IAV) and LPS-induced endotoxic shock. Cultured bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) isolated from these mitochondria CIII-deficient mice released less IL-10 than controls following TLR3 or TLR4 stimulation.

Although it is recognized that periodontal disease negatively impacts quality of life, there is no validated instrument to assess this impact in Brazil. This study aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the OHIP 14 PD (Oral Health Impact Profile Applied to Periodontal Diseases) for application among Brazilian patients. The original instrument was translated and validated into Brazilian Portuguese in a cross-sectional study with 110 participants recruited from a Dental School clinic.

Objective: To examine the predictive strength of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), motor competence (MC), maternal educational status, and parental perception of their children's favorite leisure activities for meeting physical activity (PA) guidelines of each gender among children aged 3-6 years.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with 367 preschoolers (53% girls), assessing CRF (PREFIT 20m shuttle run), MC (battery of motor skills), PA (accelerometry), maternal education and parental perception of children's preferred leisure (questionnaires). Factorial analysis of covariance, multiple logistic regression, and chi-square tests were conducted.
