HPV 29-associated spotted hyperpigmentation of the face.

Published: April 2002

A healthy immunocompetent 40-year-old man presented with spotted hyperpigmentation of the face. Skin-biopsies taken from these lesions revealed slight acanthosis of the epidermis with vacuolization within the keratinocytes in the upper malpighian layer similar to HPV-induced cytopathic viral effects. Polymerase chain reaction analysis and subsequent direct DNA sequencing could clearly demonstrate the presence of HPV 29 DNA in the hyperpigmented macules. To our knowledge, this is the first report of facial hyperpigmented lesions induced by HPV 29.

Measurement of Reduced Gingival Melanosis after Smoking Cessation: A Novel Analysis of Gingival Pigmentation Using Clinical Oral Photographs.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

June 2016

Section of Geriatric Dentistry, Department of General Dentistry, Fukuoka Dental College, Fukuoka 814-0193, Japan.

Background: Due to moisture and the anatomical complexity of the oral mucosa, it is difficult to measure the extent of gingival melanosis in an optical manner. Therefore, we developed a new quantitative method using clinical oral photographs and compared the extent of gingival melanosis before and after smoking cessation.

Methods: A new analysis method, which we named the gingival melanosis record (GMR), is a quantitative analysis method using clinical oral photographs.

Endothermic animals vary in their physiological ability to maintain a constant body temperature. Since melanin-based coloration is related to thermoregulation and energy homeostasis, we predict that dark and pale melanic individuals adopt different behaviours to regulate their body temperature. Young animals are particularly sensitive to a decrease in ambient temperature because their physiological system is not yet mature and growth may be traded-off against thermoregulation.

The role of melanism in oncillas on the temporal segregation of nocturnal activity.

The occurrence of coat colour polymorphisms in populations may promote the ecological success of species by permitting a wider spectrum of use of different subsets of available resources. We conducted an analysis of temporal segregation by comparing night brightness with nocturnal activity of spotted and melanistic oncillas (Leopardus tigrinus). Melanistic oncillas were more active during bright nights and spotted oncillas and other species were more active during dark nights.

Article Synopsis
  • - Common dermatologic eponyms and skin signs, like Aldrich-Mees' lines and Beau's lines, aid in diagnosing various conditions, ranging from arsenic poisoning to liver disease and systemic lupus erythematosus.
  • - Specific signs indicate serious health issues: for example, Gottron's papules relate to dermatomyositis, Janeway's lesions are tied to bacterial endocarditis, and palpable purpura points to leukocytoclastic vasculitis.
  • - Certain skin changes, like acanthosis nigricans and Dennie-Morgan folds, can signal internal malignancies or other diseases, highlighting the importance of dermatologic signs in medical diagnostics.

The development of skin hyperpigmentation in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis (HD) have been well documented. However, the cosmetic concern was neither valued seriously nor treated effectively in the past. We report a female case who suffered from facial hyperpigmentation (FH).
