Published: February 2002

Electrosurgery in the presence of volatile anesthetic gases has been associated with operating-room fires. We report a case in which an operating-room fire occurred while an intubated patient underwent electrosurgical tracheostomy. The fire in this case was caused by a combination of an oxygen-rich environment, a polyvinyl chloride tube, and heat generated by an electrosurgical unit. We also discuss factors that increase the risk of this type of fire and the management steps that should be undertaken in the event that such a fire occurs, and we briefly review the literature on this subject.

Background: Nurses serving in infectious disease ward represent a distinct occupational group that has attracted considerable attention following epidemic outbreaks. However, prior to this study, no research had delved into the underlying mechanism linking anxiety to burnout symptoms among infectious disease nurses. This study aimed to explore investigate the association between anxiety and burnout among nurses working in such environments and scrutinized the mediating role of perceived stress and the moderating influence of resilience on the principal relationship.

Study on the foam production characteristics of air self-suction foam generator by jet.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Gas and Fire Control for Mines, Ministry of Education, Xuzhou, 221116, China.

Confined space fires could easily cause serious casualties and property damage, and foam is an effective means of preventing confined space fires. The existing foam generator does not have both momentum and foam expansion rate (FER) and is poorly suited to confined spaces. In order to develop a foam generator suitable for confined space fire protection, an in-depth analysis of the physical foaming characteristics of self-suction foam is required, and the structure of the foam generator is optimized accordingly.

Contrasting Responses of Smoke Dispersion and Fire Emissions to Aerosol-Radiation Interaction during the Largest Australian Wildfires in 2019-2020.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Key Laboratory for Semi-Arid Climate Change of the Ministry of Education, College of Atmospheric Sciences, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou 730000, China.

The record-breaking 2019-2020 Australian wildfires have been primarily linked to climate change and its internal variability. However, the meteorological feedback mechanisms affecting smoke dispersion and wildfire emissions on a synoptic scale remain unclear. This study focused on the largest wildfires occurring between December 25, 2019 and January 10, 2020, under the enhanced subtropical high, when the double peak in wildfire evolution was favored by sustained low humidity and two synchronous increases in temperature and wind.

Background: Grid cells are spatially modulated cells in the entorhinal cortex (EC) that fire in a hexagonally patterned grid which tiles the environment. These cells are assumed important in human spatial navigation. The EC is vulnerable to neurodegenerative processes in both normal aging and Alzheimer's disease and decline in grid cell function may be a key factor in understanding age-related navigational decline.

Background: Clinical trials in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) suffer from high failure rates, in part due to imprecision in endpoint measurements that introduces noise. SIA is a quantitative approach that utilizes algorithms to identify inconsistencies in measurements that may be indicative of problematic scale administration and/or scoring errors. The CDR, a sole primary and key secondary endpoint in many AD trials, can be challenging to score, particularly in early symptomatic and mild diseases.
