Objective: To investigate the relationship of expression of NPM-ALK cohesive gene protein with the subtypes and prognosis of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).

Methods: Nineteen cases of ALCL with CD30 positivity were studied. Immunohistochemical staining was performed in paraffin sections by using polyclonal antibody anti-p80 and other monoclonal antibodies. The clinical data of these patients were analyzed and all patients were followed-up.

Results: The neoplastic cells in 9 out of 19 ALCL expressed p80 protein. Histopathologically, all 9 cases with p80 expression were common type and small cell type. None of these 9 cases were Hodgkin like type (P < 0.05). Immunologically, all the 9 positive cases were T and null cell phenotype and none of them was B cell or other phenotype (P < 0.05). Clinically, the patients with p80 expression were younger than those without p80 expression (P < 0.05). The prognosis of the former was worse than in the later (P < 0.05).

Conclusions: p80 positive ALCL could be a new clinicopathological entity. The polyclonal antibody anti-p80 might be an useful marker for the differential diagnosis and prognosis estimation of ALCL.

Cajal body formation is regulated by coilin SUMOylation.

J Cell Sci

December 2024

Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, The University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS 39216-4505, USA.

Cajal bodies (CBs) are membraneless organelles whose mechanism of formation is still not fully understood. Many proteins contribute to the formation of CBs, including Nopp140 (NOLC1), WRAP53 and coilin. Coilin is modified on multiple different lysine residues by SUMO, the small ubiquitin-like modifier.

Survival motor neuron protein (SMN), which is linked to spinal muscular atrophy, is a key component of the Gemin complex, which is essential for the assembly of small nuclear RNA-protein complexes (snRNPs). After initial snRNP assembly in the cytoplasm, both snRNPs and SMN migrate to the nucleus and associate with Cajal bodies, where final snRNP maturation occurs. It is assumed that SMN must be free from the Cajal bodies for continuous snRNP biogenesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Prenatal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) and postnatal consumption of a trans fat diet (TFD) were studied to see their effects on the gut microbiome of rat offspring.
  • *The research found that offspring on TFD had significantly lower diversity in their gut bacteria compared to those on a normal diet (ND), suggesting a major shift in their microbiome composition.
  • *The findings indicate that postnatal diet may have a more substantial impact on gut health than prenatal BPA exposure, potentially leading to metabolic diseases in the offspring.

The Cajal body, a nuclear condensate, is crucial for ribonucleoprotein assembly, including small nuclear RNPs (snRNPs). While Coilin has been identified as an integral component of Cajal bodies, its exact function remains unclear. Moreover, no Coilin ortholog has been found in unicellular organisms to date.

Article Synopsis
  • Fever is crucial for defending against infections, but individual responses can vary due to factors like sex and previous health history.
  • The studies aimed to explore whether adolescent alcohol misuse affects fever severity in rats after exposure to a viral mimic (poly I:C).
  • Results showed minimal sex differences in fever sensitivity, but rats with a history of alcohol misuse exhibited heightened fever responses and increased immune response markers when exposed to poly I:C.
