We present experimental evidence of self-healing shear cracks at a gel/glass interface. This system exhibits two dynamical regimes depending on the driving velocity: steady sliding at high velocity (>V(c) approximately 100--125 microm/s), characterized by a shear-thinning rheology, and periodic stick-slip dynamics at low velocity. In this last regime, slip occurs by propagation of pulses that restick via a "healing instability" occurring when the local sliding velocity reaches the macroscopic transition velocity V(c). At driving velocities close below V(c), the system exhibits complex spatiotemporal behavior.

A highly stable and reusable fluorescent multisample nanobiosensor for the detection of α-glucosidase inhibitors has been developed by coupling fluorescent liposomal nanoparticles based on conjugated polymers (L-CPNs) to the enzyme α-glucosidase, one of the main target enzymes in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The mechanism of sensing is based on the fluorescence "turn-on" of L-CPNs by -nitrophenol (PNP), the end product of the enzymatic hydrolysis of -nitrophenyl-α-d-glucopyranoside. L-CPNs, composed of lipid vesicles coated with a blue-emitting cationic polyfluorene, were designed and characterized to obtain a good response to PNP.

Two-dimensional antimonene has many potential applications for its high mobility, high stability, and tunable band gap. The covalent chemistry of antimonene and the molecular doping or hybrid of antimonene remain incomplete for further applications. In this work, silane-functionalized antimonene nanosheets and their copolymerized organically modified silicate gel glasses are designed and prepared.

In recent years, many different kinds of nonlinear optical materials have been applied to passively Q-switched solid-state lasers. However, the average output powers of these lasers are typically limited to 1 W due to the low damage threshold of the materials. In this study, a molybdenum-disulfide-doped glass-composite absorber was synthesized using the sol-gel method and spin-coating technique.

Hydrophobicity and solvation of different charged species are among the various key factors that regulate the self-assembly of colloids, and macromolecules in their suspensions. In this paper, we demonstrate a method to tune the interaction potential and the resulting phase behaviour and microstructure of the states that form by using a combination of Laponite nanoplatelets and alcohols in water. This allows us to exquisitely control the self-assembly process of Laponite nanoplatelets.

Preparation of highly luminescent glasses involves expensive and complicated processes and usually requires high temperature. In this work, we show that luminescent silicon (Si) nanoparticle (NP)- embedded silicate gel glasses can be developed under near-ambient conditions by a remarkably simple, one-pot strategy, without using any sophisticated instrumentation or technique. Simultaneous hydrolysis and reduction of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane leads to the formation of colloidal Si nanocrystals that can be transformed to a glassy phase upon slow evaporation followed by freezing.
