Herein, a novel pillararene-based cavitand with fixed planar chirality was synthesized by the SuFEx reaction. As demonstrated by single crystal X-ray analysis, host-guest capsules involving this cavitand and linear alkanes with specific lengths are observed in the solid state. The formation of each capsule is driven by hydrogen bonding interactions between a linear alkane molecule and two cavitand molecules, as well as noncovalent interactions between the two cavitand molecules in this capsule.

Different nanocarriers-based strategies are now extensively being used as an important strategy for improving drug efficacy and responsiveness, reducing toxicity issues related to drugs and harmful side effects, and overcoming the numerous significant difficulties related to absorption and bioavailability. Amongst different nanocarriers, nanovesicles are excellent and versatile systems for effectively delivering biomolecules, drugs, and targeted ligand distribution and location. Nanovesicles are nanosized self-assembling spherical capsules with an aqueous core and one/more lipid(s) layers.

Protein capsules are promising drug delivery vehicles for cancer research therapies. Apoferritin (AFt) is a self-assembling 12 nm diameter hollow nanocage with many desirable features for drug delivery, however, control of drug retention inside the protein cage remains challenging. Here we report the encapsulation of copper(ii)-1,10-phenanthroline (Cu(phen)) within the horse spleen AFt (HSAFt) nanocage, by diffusion of the metal through the pores between the protein subunits.

Microorganism-mediated self-assembling of living formulations holds great promise for disease therapy. Here, we constructed a prebiotic-probiotic living capsule (PPLC) by coculturing probiotics (EcN) with () in a prebiotic-containing fermentation broth. Through shaking the culture, secretes cellulose fibrils that can spontaneously encapsulate EcN to form microcapsules under shear forces.

Institute for Stem-Cell Biology, Regenerative Medicine and Innovative Therapies (ISBReMIT), IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy.

Human pancreatic islets transplantation is an experimental therapeutic treatment for Type I Diabetes. Limited islets lifespan in culture remains the main drawback, due to the absence of native extracellular matrix as mechanical support after their enzymatic and mechanical isolation procedure. Extending the limited islets lifespan by creating a long-term culture remains a challenge.
