To clarify the effect of the fluorine atom and piperazine ring on norfloxacin (NOR), NOR degradation products (NOR-DPs, P1-P8) were generated via UV combined with hydrogen peroxide (UV/HO) technology. NOR degradation did not significantly affect cytotoxicity of NOR against BV2, A549, HepG2, and Vero E6 cells. Compared with that of NOR, mutagenicity and median lethal concentration of P1-P8 in fathead minnow were increased, and bioaccumulation factor and oral median lethal dose of P1-P8 in rats were decreased.

Article Synopsis
  • Typical PEDOT:PSS hole-transporting layers have issues like energy level mismatches and high acidity that decrease device performance.
  • An innovative method involves treating indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates with halogenated solvents, leading to four distinct types of ITO anodes with improved physical properties.
  • The new ITO anodes show increased work functions and better power conversion efficiencies in organic photovoltaic devices compared to traditional ITO/PEDOT:PSS, demonstrating the potential for more efficient solar energy solutions.

The [Fe]/HO oxidation system has found wide applications in chemistry and biology. Halogenation with this [Fe]/HO oxidation protocol and halide (X) in the biological system is well established with the identification of heme-iron-dependent haloperoxidases. However, mimicking such halogenation process is rarely explored for practical use in organic synthesis.

Mechanistic studies of thiol reactivity can be challenging because electrophilic reaction intermediates, such as sulfenic acids (RSOH) and sulfenyl chlorides (RSCl), are generally too reactive to be observed directly. Herein we report the design and synthesis of a sterically-encumbered fluorinated triptycene thiol which enables direct observation of reaction intermediates in aqueous buffer by F NMR, as demonstrated in reactions with hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorous acid. Reactions with HO resulted in the formation of a persistent RSOH species, which was subsequently converted to a sulfinic acid (RSOH) and then a sulfonic acid (RSOH), while RSCl was found to be the intermediate in reactions with HOCl.

Electrochemical methods for treating phenolic wastewater have been widely studied, with most research focusing primarily on the anode, while the cathode has generally served as a counter electrode. This study aims to enhance the electrocatalytic process by developing a new Fe/Cu-based cathode using a simple redox method. We created a CuOCu@Fe-FeO (0 < x < 1, combining FeO and FeO) electrode, referred to as CCFFO, to facilitate the electro-Fenton process without requiring additional HO or Fe.
