Background: The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of adjunctive meloxicam on the matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) levels of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in chronic periodontitis patients following the initial phase of periodontal therapy.

Methods: Twelve chronic periodontitis patients received 7.5 mg meloxicam, and 10 patients received placebo tablets together with scaling and root planing in a 1 x 1 regimen for 10 days. Scaling and root planing were performed on day 3 of drug intake. The MMP-8 levels in GCF samples obtained before and on day 10 of drug intake were determined by using the immunofluorescence assay. Plaque index (PI), papilla bleeding index (PBI), and GCF MMP-8 levels were compared within each patient group, between the 2 patient groups, and also with a clinically healthy control group using non-parametric statistical analyses.

Results: Both meloxicam and placebo groups showed statistically significant reductions in PBI, PI, and GCF MMP-8 levels on day 10 compared to baseline (P<0.01). The GCF MMP-8 level on day 10 in the meloxicam group was similar to the clinically healthy control group (P>0.05), while it was significantly higher in the placebo group (P<0.01). Positive correlations were found between MMP-8 total amounts and PBI scores at baseline and day 10 of drug intake in the patient groups.

Conclusions: Meloxicam showed a tendency to reduce GCF MMP-8 levels in vivo within the first 10 days when used as an adjunct in the initial phase of periodontal treatment that consists of scaling and root planing. Verification of this effect on collagenase-2 downregulation, as well as on the clinical periodontal parameters in long-term studies using larger test and control groups, is needed to provide further support for the adjunctive use of selective cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitors in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.

Chronic wound management requires continuous monitoring to assess healing and guide treatment. We developed a hollow microneedle array patch integrated with a lateral flow immunoassay strip to address the need for convenient, home-based diagnostics. This device extracts wound exudate directly from the wound matrix, overcoming the limitations of conventional swab sampling, which relies on surface exudate collection.

Objective: In this clinical study, chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) was chosen as the positive control group, and the clinical and biochemical efficacy of mouthwashes with green tea, white tea and essential oil (EO) as the active ingredients were aimed to be examined comprehensively.

Methods: A total of 112 participants with gingivitis were randomly assigned to four different groups and different mouthwashes were used for 4 weeks: CHX-MW group (as a positive control group), EO-MW group, GT-MW group and WT-MW group. The effects of the mouthwashes on plaque, inflammation and dental staining were evaluated by indexed scores at the beginning and 4th week.

Background: Ovarian carcinoma (OC) has an unfavorable prognosis due to lack of screening and an asymptomatic course. New diagnostic methods are being sought to enable earlier diagnosis of this condition. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic utility of collagenases (MMP-1, MMP-8 and MMP-13) in the diagnosis of OC compared to HE4 and CA125 and the ROMA.

December 2024

Department of Periodontology and Implant Biology, School of Dentistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Aim:  This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the active matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) quantitative chairside point-of-care (PoC) lateral flow immunotest for peri-implant diseases, and it sought to correlate aMMP-8 levels with clinical parameters to determine its effectiveness as a biomarker for peri-implantitis.

Materials And Methods:  A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Periodontology and Implant Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Participants included systemically healthy individuals with at least one implant loaded for more than 1 year, who had not received periodontal treatment or antibiotics in the preceding 6 months.

Lyme disease, caused by , is the most common tick-borne infection in the United States. Arthritis is a major clinical manifestation of infection, and synovial tissue damage has been attributed to the excessive pro-inflammatory responses. The secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) promotes tissue repair and exerts anti-inflammatory effects.
