In this article a case of schizophrenic-like symptoms in a patient with thrombo-angiitis obliterans (TAO) is presented. His CT and MRI findings indicated a diffuse ischemia in the white matter, suggestive of TAO, not of focal lesions. The patient, except for age, did not have other risk factors for other cerebrovascular diseases. Psychotic symptoms may be the result of cerebral TAO, via deep and periventricular white matter lesions.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is linked to psychiatric disorders, possibly due to damage to the intestinal barrier and the blood-brain barrier (BBB) affecting mental health.
  • A study using acetic acid to induce colitis in mice assessed behavior changes (like social interaction and anxiety) while measuring the expression of Claudin-5 (a BBB regulator) and inflammatory markers in the colon and brain.
  • Findings revealed significant behavioral changes in mice (increased activity but less social interaction), as well as inflammation and reduced expression of Claudin-5, suggesting that colitis may impair both gut and brain barriers, contributing to behavioral issues.

Several studies suggest that crack cocaine users exhibit higher prevalence of both psychiatric and psychosocial problems, with an aggressive pattern of drug use. Nevertheless, few experimental studies attempted to verify the neurotoxicity after crack cocaine exposure, especially when compared with other routes of cocaine administration. This systematic review aimed to verify whether in vitro and/or in vivo crack cocaine exposure is more neurotoxic than cocaine exposure (snorted or injected).

Mixed depressive states are defined by the co-presence of depressive and manic symptoms. They represent extremely variable conditions from the point of view of clinical expressiveness and are difficult to recognize, ranging from clear schizophrenic-like psychoses and pseudodemented pictures to subsyndromal psychopathology. At the basis of the extreme variability of depressive pictures with mixed features are the different combinations that depressive and manic symptoms can assume.

Social isolation is a reliable method used for the induction of depression and psychiatric disorders in rodents. It has been suggested that social isolation can lead to hyperlocomotion, as a schizophrenic-like symptom in rodents. On the other hand, crocin (the major constituent of Crocus sativus) induces a wide-range of neuroprotective and mood enhancer effects.

Acromegalic patients always demonstrate a wide range of clinic manifestations, including typical physical changes such as acral and facial features, as well as untypical neuropsychiatric and psychological disturbances. However, there is still a lack of clinical guidance on the treatment for acromegalic patients with psychiatric comorbidities. We therefore share this case to provide a reference for clinicians to manage the acromegalic patients with psychiatric symptoms.
