Defenses against goodness.

Psychoanal Q

Published: January 2002

This paper examines the fantasies and conflicts of analysands who avoid the experience and expression of positive reactions to the goodness of others and who hide feelings that would elicit that goodness. Envious wishes to spoil good objects, attachments to bad objects, defenses against gratitude and dependence, negative therapeutic reactions, and other such conflictual developments can help forestall depressive anxiety in these analysands. They dread abandoning narcissistic, omnipotent, sadomasochistic, and persecutory paranoidschizoid positions, and fear moving toward the mature depressive position, with its burdens of seemingly intolerable guilt, concern, felt ambivalence, and vulnerability to humiliation and disappointment.

Establishing prognostic models for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma based on immune cells.

World J Gastrointest Oncol

October 2024

Department of Hepatic Surgery I (Ward I) Shanghai Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital, Navy Medical University, Shanghai 200433, China.

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a malignant liver tumor that is challenging to treat and manage and current prognostic models for the disease are inefficient or ineffective. Tumor-associated immune cells are critical for tumor development and progression. The main goal of this study was to establish models based on tumor-associated immune cells for predicting the overall survival of patients undergoing surgery for ICC.

Article Synopsis
  • The rebuttal by Mills et al. (2024) defends the statistical methods used in the Randomised Badger Culling Trial (RBCT), particularly the choice of count over rate for assessing bovine tuberculosis herd incidence.
  • * The authors argue that previous analyses overfit data and incorrectly apply Bayesian methods, prioritizing model fit over practical predictive power in a small dataset context.
  • * Ultimately, the RBCT's findings on the impact of badger culling on bovine tuberculosis incidence are deemed unconvincing, with modern veterinary insights suggesting the original conclusions still stand but require a nuanced understanding.

The temporal dynamics of insect populations in agroecosystems are influenced by numerous biotic and abiotic interactions, including trophic interactions in complex food webs. Predicting the regulation of herbivorous insect pests by arthropod predators and parasitoids would allow for rendering crop production less dependent on chemical pesticides. Curtsdotter et al.

[Prediction of Ozone Pollution in Sichuan Basin Based on Random Forest Model].

Huan Jing Ke Xue

May 2024

High Impact Weather Key Laboratory of China Meteorological Administration, College of Meteorology and Oceanography, National University of Defense Technology, Changsha 410000, China.

To study the long-term variation in ozone (O) pollution in Sichuan Basin, the spatiaotemporal distribution of O concentrations during 2017 to 2020 was analyzed using ground-level O concentration data and meteorological observation data from 18 cities in the basin. The dominant meteorological factors affecting the variation in O concentration were screened out,and a prediction model between meteorological factors and O concentration was constructed based on a random forest model. Finally,a prediction analysis of O pollution in the Sichuan Basin urban agglomeration during 2020 was carried out.

Smoking rates in the military are evaluated through questionnaire surveying. Because the accurate identification of smokers facilitates the provision of smoking cessation services, this study conducted urine cotinine concentration testing to verify the accuracy of self-reported smoking behavior by female volunteer soldiers and analyzed the effects of second-hand smoking on urine cotinine concentrations. This study is a cross-sectional study conducted using purposive sampling on female volunteer soldiers receiving training at the Taichung Recruit Training Center in May 2014.
