Dogfish hair cells sense hydrostatic pressure.

Published: January 2002

Many marine invertebrates and fish respond to hydrostatic pressure in order to regulate their depth and synchronize their behaviour to tidal cycles. Here we investigate the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the vestibular hair cells located in the labyrinth of the dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula, and find that it modulates their spontaneous activity and response to angular acceleration. This may explain not only the low resting activity of vertebrate hair cells but also how fish that do not have swim bladders can sense hydrostatic cues.

The cochlea phenotypically differs from the vestibule in the Gfi1 mouse.

Dev Dyn

January 2025

Department of Human Anatomy, College of Basic Medical Sciences, Jilin University, Changchun, China.

Background: Previous studies with Gfi1-mutated lines have shown that Gfi1 is essential for hair cell maturation and survival.

Results: We analyzed the phenotype of another Gfi1-mutated line Gfi1 in the inner ears of neonates at P5-7 and found that the cochlea phenotypically differed from the vestibule in the Gfi1 mouse. Specifically, there was a marked reduction in hair cells in the cochlea, which was characterized by greater reductions in the outer hair cells but far less reductions (mainly in the basal turn) in the inner hair cells, whereas the vestibular hair cells remained unaffected.

Dermatologic Adverse Events Following Afatinib in a Woman with Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: A Case Report.

Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran-Dr Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.

Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRI) are biological factors used in several types of cancer, including non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLC). One of the EGFR inhibitors that has been approved for NSCLC is afatinib. Dermatologic adverse events are the most commonly reported and may impair the patient's compliance to the therapy as it causes aesthetic discomfort and significantly impact the patient's quality of life.

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common forms of hearing loss in adults and also one of the most common occupational diseases. Extensive previous work has shown that the highly sensitive synapses of the inner hair cells (IHCs) may be the first target for irreparable damage and permanent loss in the noise-exposed cochlea, more precisely in the cochlear base. However, how such synaptic loss affects the synaptic physiology of the IHCs in this particularly vulnerable part of the cochlea has not yet been investigated.

Objective: Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by the chronic shedding of large clumps of epidermal cells. Alongside negative physical symptoms, dandruff is thought to have a detrimental impact on individuals' mental health. The aim of this study was to determine whether the clinical benefits of using an anti-dandruff shampoo (ADS) will result in improved psychological wellbeing in individuals suffering from dandruff.

Background: There is no definitive solution for the treatment of striae distensae (SD), and effectiveness of each treatment method remains controversial. We aimed to investigate and compare the efficacy of the combination of Erbium YAG (Er:YAG) laser and stromal vascular fraction (SVF), the combination of Er:YAG laser and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Er:YAG laser plus saline in the treatment of SD.

Materials And Methods: In 12 participating patients with at least three lesions (36 lesions in total), each lesion was treated with an Er:YAG laser.
