Epiglottic movement patterns of 500 consecutive patients with varying etiologies were recorded during routine videofluoroscopic swallow evaluations. Seven distinct, commonly repeated, abnormal epiglottic patterns were identified. A multifactorial analysis of these seven abnormal epiglottic movement patterns was completed. Findings indicate that each of these seven distinct movement patterns have varying rates and amounts of aspiration. A description of each epiglottic movement pattern is given in conjunction with information regarding aspiration and other variables associated with the swallow process. A universal nomenclature is offered regarding these subtle abnormal epiglottic movement patterns to increase a verbal commonality in our descriptions of epiglottic function as it affects aspiration.

Objective: This pilot study was designed to test the tolerability of a lower scope position and feasibility of custom-designed MATLAB graphical user interface (GUI) used to analyze playback review of laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (laryngeal HSV) during healthy volitional dry swallows. We hypothesized this method would conceptually provide time resolution for glottic closure events compared with standard (30 frames per second, fps), and enable a means to measure timing, sequence, and duration of laryngeal movements during swallowing not otherwise visualized.
Methods: A total of 14 healthy adults (4 male, 22-80 years) participated.

Objective: Adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) disrupts fine motor movements of vocal folds during speech, resulting in a strained, broken, and strangled voice. Laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) in connected speech enables the direct visualization of detailed laryngeal dynamics, hence, it can be effectively used to study AdLD. The current study utilizes HSV to investigate supraglottic laryngeal tissue maneuvers obstructing the view of the vocal folds, in AdLD and normophonic speakers during connected speech.
