Preillumination of Rhodospirillum rubrum chromatophores with strong, far-red light in the presence of phenazine methosulfate under non-phosphorylation conditions results in a selective, irreversible inactivation (typically about 70%) of photophosphorylation and of uncoupler-stimulated dark ATPase. The time course of the photoinactivation is similar to the light-on kinetics of the light-induced proton uptake in the absence of ADP. Only little photoinactivation occurs when the uncoupler carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenyl hydrazone is present or when phenazine methosulfate is absent during the preillumination, indicating that the reaction occurs only when the membrane is energized. Phosphorylation conditions offer a practically complete protection against the photoinactivation. Inorganic phosphate, Mg2+ or ADP do not provide a significant protection against the photoinactivation, nor does ATP. The pH-dependence of the reaction(s) leading to photoinactivation may indicate that a partial reaction of the photophosphorylation process (perhaps only a conformational change of the coupling factor) precedes the photoinactivation.

To maintain CO fixation in the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, multistep regulation of the chloroplast ATP synthase (CFF) is crucial to balance the ATP output of photosynthesis with protection of the apparatus. A well-studied mechanism is thiol modulation; a light/dark regulation through reversible cleavage of a disulfide in the CFF γ-subunit. The disulfide hampers ATP synthesis and hydrolysis reactions in dark-adapted CFF from land plants by increasing the required transmembrane electrochemical proton gradient ([Formula: see text]).

Background: Src family kinases (SFKs) contribute to migraine pathogenesis, yet its role in regulating photophobia behaviour, one of the most common forms of migraine, remains unknown. Here, we addressed whether SFKs antagonism alleviates photophobia behavior and explored the underlying mechanism involving hypothalamus and trigeminal ganglion activity, as measured by the alteration of neuropeptide levels and transcriptome respectively.
Methods: A rapid-onset and injury-free mouse model of photophobia was developed following intranasal injection of the TRPA1 activator, umbellulone.

There is a growing interest in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) aquaculture to extend the time fish are reared in freshwater (FW) recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), producing larger FW salmon that can then be induced to undergo smoltification before transfer into marine net pens for grow-out and harvest. Smolts can be produced by photoperiod (PT) manipulation in RASs, but little is known about how delaying smoltification to larger body sizes affects susceptibility to elevated CO levels (hypercapnia), which can occur at high stocking densities in FW RAS or during transport from FW RAS rearing facilities to marine net pens. To address this, Atlantic salmon were reared from hatch to one of three different sizes (~230, ~580, or ~1300 g) in FW (3 ppt) under continuous light (24:0, light:dark).

Plant thioredoxins (TRXs) are involved in numerous metabolic and signalling pathways, such as light-dependent regulation of photosynthesis. The atypical TRX CDSP32, chloroplastic drought-induced stress protein of 32 kDa, includes two TRX-fold domains and participates in responses to oxidative stress as an electron donor to other thiol reductases. Here, we further characterised potato lines modified for CDSP32 expression to clarify the physiological roles of the TRX.
