Sports-related concussions (SRCs) are a major health issue in athletes of varying ages, ability levels, and sports. Concerns over the short- and long-term consequences of SRCs have incentivized a wealth of products and policies aimed at reducing SRC risk. Research suggesting the effectiveness of such interventions at reducing SRCs has facilitated their adoption by sports organizations and, in some cases, product commercialization.

Background: Many individuals undergoing surgery involving general anesthesia are asked to fast for a prolonged period to ensure perioperative safety, yet this can initiate stress reactions and insulin resistance, harming postoperative recovery. Such fasting may be particularly problematic for those who have type 2 diabetes. Here, we assessed how giving such individuals' oral carbohydrates before total knee arthroplasty can affect outcomes.

Background: Alcohol craving is related to problematic alcohol use; therefore, pharmacotherapies that modulate alcohol craving are of interest. N-acetylcysteine, an over-the-counter antioxidant, is a candidate pharmacotherapy for adolescent alcohol use with the potential to impact craving. Cue-reactivity paradigms using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can identify neural regions implicated in craving and serve as a screening tool for novel pharmacotherapy options.
