The aim of this work is to incorporate lanthanide-cored upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) into the surface of microengineered biomedical implants to create a spatially controlled and optically releasable model drug delivery device in an integrated fashion. Our approach enables silicone-based microelectrocorticography (ECoG) implants holding platinum/iridium recording sites to serve as a stable host of UCNPs. Nanoparticles excitable in the near-infrared (lower energy) regime and emitting visible (higher energy) light are utilized in a study.

The forces generated by action potentials in muscle cells shuttle blood, food and waste products throughout the luminal structures of the body. Although non-invasive electrophysiological techniques exist, most mechanosensors cannot access luminal structures non-invasively. Here we introduce non-toxic ingestible mechanosensors to enable the quantitative study of luminal forces and apply them to study feeding in living Caenorhabditis elegans roundworms.

Chagas disease, vectored by kissing bugs, poses a public health problem across the Americas. The best way for reducing disease transmission is through vector control, which is currently based on the use of insecticides. However, insecticide resistance, and environmental and health issues, stress the need for new, environmentally-friendly methods for reducing vector-host contacts.

In this work, we disclose a series of seven quadrupolar centrosymmetric 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-]pyrroles (DHPPs) linked to the two peripheral, strongly electron-accepting heterocycles such as benzoxadiazole, benzothiadiazole and benzoselenadiazole. This represents the first study probing the influence of electron-deficient heterocycles, rather that small electron-withdrawing substituents, on photophysics of DHPPs. These new acceptor-donor-acceptor hybrid dyes exhibit an appreciable combination of photophysical properties including absorption maxima in the range of 470-620 nm, and emission in the range of 500-720 nm with fluorescence quantum yields reaching 0.

Purpose: The objectives of the study were to evaluate the validity of intraoperative flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs) when electroretinograms (ERGs) were unstable, to compare white versus red light-emitting diodes, and to assess the impact of luminance on ERG variability.
Methods: Thirty patients were included (Inomed system; pre- and postoperative visual fields). Possible changes in visual fields were assessed with mean defects in perimetry.
