It is shown that alcohol-water mixtures (e.g., 43 wt% ethanol) provide a suitable medium for the efficient production in high yield of beta-hematin from ferriprotoporphyrin IX (FP), as measured by infrared spectroscopy. Previous and present light-absorption data of FP, obtained under specific acid conditions in an ethanol-water medium, suggest the presence of FP monomers, which are considered to promote the reaction leading to beta-hematin. Other aspects of the mechanism of reaction are discussed.

The manipulation and control of free-standing liquid film drainage dynamics is of paramount importance in many technological fields and related products, ranging from liquid lenses to liquid foams and 2D structures. In this context, we theoretically design and introduce a device where we can reversibly drive flow regime switch between viscous-capillary and viscous-gravity in a thin free-standing liquid film by altering its shape, allowing us to manipulate and stabilize the film thickness over time. The device, which mainly consists of a syringe pump, a pressure transducer, and a 3D-printed cylinder, is coupled with a digital holography setup to measure, in real time, the evolution of the local film thickness map, revealing characteristic features of viscous-capillary and viscous-gravity driven drainage regimes.

Hypothesis: Sculpting liquids into different shapes is usually based on the interfacial interactions of functionalized nanoparticles or polymers with specific ligands, leading to exciting material properties due to the combination of the mobility of liquid components with the solid-like characteristic of the arrested liquid/liquid interface. There is an intense interest in novel structured liquids produced from simple compounds with versatile application potentials. Complexes of oppositely charged commercial polyelectrolytes and traditional aliphatic surfactants are good candidates for this goal since they reveal rich structural features and could adsorb at various interfaces.

A self-consistent scheme is presented that is applicable for revealing details of the microscopic structure of hydrogen-bonded liquids, including the description of the hydrogen-bonded network. The scheme starts with diffraction measurements, followed by molecular dynamics simulations. Computational results are compared with the experimentally accessible information on the structure, which is most frequently the total scattering structure factor.

The development of a circular economy is a key target to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and create more sustainable processes. Concerning hydrogen as an energy vector, the use of liquid organic hydrogen carriers is a promising strategy, but most of them present limitations for hydrogen release, such as harsh reaction conditions, poor recyclability, and low-value byproducts. Herein, we present a novel sustainable methodology to produce value-added silicon precursors and concomitant hydrogen via dehydrogenative coupling by using an air- and water-stable cobalt-based catalyst synthesized from cheap and commercially available starting materials.

Clustering chemistry is a key point in the design and synthesis of the secondary building units that comprise metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on group IV metals. In this work, the first stages of the zirconium-carboxylate clustering process in alcohol/water mixtures are studied in detail using the monocarboxylic benzoic and hydroxybenzoic acids to avoid the polymerization. Mass spectroscopy measurements performed on the reactions revealed the presence of hexa- and pentanuclear species even at low pH values and also evidenced the acid-base nature and pH dependence of the transformation between both species.
