Nuclear calcium (Ca2+) signaling is crucial for symbiotic interactions between legumes and beneficial microbes, such as rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The ion channels DMI1 and CNGC15 are key to generating repetitive nuclear Ca2+ oscillations. Despite more than 20 years of research on symbiotic nuclear Ca2+ spiking, important questions remain, including the exact function of the DMI1 channel.

Background: Soil microorganisms play an extensive role in the biogeochemical cycles providing the nutrients necessary for plant growth. Root-associated bacteria and fungi, originated from soil, are also known to influence host health. The present scenario of agricultural sector is dependent hugely on the use of chemical-based fertilizers and pesticides that impact the nutritional quality, health status, and productivity of the crops. Moreover, continuous release of these chemical inputs causes toxic compounds such as metals to accumulate in the soil and move to the plants with prolonged exposure, which ultimately impact the human health. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi gain access to nutrient patches outside the rhizosphere by producing an extensive network of fine hyphae. Here, we focused on establishing the mechanism by which AM fungal hyphae reach discrete organic patches with a cohort of functional bacteria transported in a biofilm on their surface.
