Article Abstract

In space flight conditions gravity, magnetic, and electrical fields as well as ionizing radiation change both in size, and in direction. This causes disruptions in the conduct of some physical processes, chemical reactions, and metabolism in living organisms. In these conditions organisms of different phylogenetic level change their metabolic reactions undergo changes such as disturbances in ionic exchange both in lower and in higher plants, changes in cell morphology for example, gyrosity in Proteus (Proteus vulgaris), spatial disorientation in coleoptiles of Wheat (Triticum aestivum) and Pea (Pisum sativum) seedlings, mutational changes in Crepis (Crepis capillaris) and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seedling. It has been found that even in the absence of gravity, gravireceptors determining spatial orientation in higher plants under terrestrial conditions are formed in the course of ontogenesis. Under weightlessness this system does not function and spatial orientation is determined by the light flux gradient or by the action of some other factors. Peculiarities of the formation of the gravireceptor apparatus in higher plants, amphibians, fish, and birds under space flight conditions have been observed. It has been found that the system in which responses were accompanied by phase transition have proven to be gravity-sensitive under microgravity conditions. Such reactions include also the process of photosynthesis which is the main energy production process in plants. In view of the established effects of microgravity and different natural physical fields on biological processes, it has been shown that these processes change due to the absence of initially rigid determination. The established biological effect of physical fields influence on biological processes in organisms is the starting point for elucidating the role of gravity and evolutionary development of various organisms on Earth.

ConspectusThe electronic properties of atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials can be precisely manipulated by vertically stacking them with a controlled offset (for example, a rotational offset─i.e., twist─between the layers, or a small difference in lattice constant) to generate moiré superlattices.

For potential application in advanced memory devices such as dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) or NAND flash, nanolaminated indium oxide (In-O) and gallium oxide (Ga-O) films with five different vertical cation distributions were grown and investigated by using a plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) process. Specifically, this study provides an in-depth examination of how the control of individual layer thicknesses in the nanolaminated (NL) IGO structure impacts not only the physical and chemical properties of the thin film but also the overall device performance. To eliminate the influence of the cation composition ratio and overall thickness on the IGO thin film, these parameters were held constant across all conditions.

Supramolecularly Built Local Electric Field Microenvironment around Cobalt Phthalocyanine in Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Photocatalysis.

The local electric field (LEF) plays an important role in the catalytic process; however, the precise construction and manipulation of the electric field microenvironment around the active site remains a significant challenge. Here, we have developed a supramolecular strategy for the implementation of a LEF by introducing the host macrocycle 18-crown-6 (18C6) into a cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc)-containing covalent organic framework (COF). Utilizing the supramolecular interaction between 18C6 and potassium ion (K), a locally enhanced K concentration around CoPc can be built to generate a LEF microenvironment around the catalytically active Co site.

Ab initio study on the dynamics and spectroscopy of collective rovibrational polaritons.

J Chem Phys

Institute of Chemistry, ELTE Eötvös Loránd University, Pázmány Péter Sétány 1/A, H-1117 Budapest, Hungary.

Accurate rovibrational molecular models are employed to gain insight in high-resolution into the collective effects and intermolecular processes arising when molecules in the gas phase interact with a resonant infrared (IR) radiation mode. An efficient theoretical approach is detailed, and numerical results are presented for the HCl, H2O, and CH4 molecules confined in an IR cavity. It is shown that by employing a rotationally resolved model for the molecules, revealing the various cavity-mediated interactions between the field-free molecular eigenstates, it is possible to obtain a detailed understanding of the physical processes governing the energy level structure, absorption spectra, and dynamic behavior of the confined systems.

Background: During the course of the past two decades, head-mounted augmented reality surgical navigation (HMARSN) systems have been increasingly employed in a variety of surgical specialties as a result of both advancements in augmented reality-related technologies and surgeons' desires to overcome some drawbacks inherent to conventional surgical navigation systems. In the present time, most experimental HMARSN systems adopt overlain display (OD) that overlay virtual models and planned routes of surgical tools on corresponding physical tissues, organs, lesions, and so forth, in a surgical field so as to provide surgeons with an intuitive and direct view to gain better hand-eye coordination as well as avoid attention shift and loss of sight (LOS), among other benefits during procedures. Yet, its system accuracy, which is the most crucial performance indicator of any surgical navigation system, is difficult to ascertain because it is highly subjective and user-dependent.
