Although radiological involvement of the lower dorsal and upper lumbar vertebrae is common in the severe form of Hunter's disease (MPS II), there are reports in the literature that clinical kyphosis does not occur. We report a boy with marked clinical kyphosis in whom the diagnosis of MPS II was proved by demonstrating a severe deficiency of serum and leucocyte iduronate-sulphate sulphatase and an accelerated incorporation of radiosulphate into his cultured fibroblast glycosaminoglycans, which could not be corrected by the product of other typed reference MPS II cells. The existence of several other genetic diseases, sometimes complicated by kyphosis, was excluded by assay of fibroblast lysosomal enzymes.

Awareness of cardiovascular disease risk and care received among Australian women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: a cross-sectional survey.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

January 2025

School of Health Sciences, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, University of Newcastle, Callaghan, New South Wales, NSW, 2308, Australia.

Background: Women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), including chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Current research suggests that general practitioners are unaware of women's HDP history, and although ideally placed to follow-up with these women, there is limited understanding of current CVD prevention practices in women after HDP. Additionally, preeclampsia confers a higher CVD risk compared to other types of HDP, and Australian research suggests that lower socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with a higher incidence of both HDP and CVD.

Background: A goal of mucosal human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) vaccines is to generate mucosal plasma cells producing polymeric IgA (pIgA)-neutralizing antibodies at sites of viral entry. However, vaccine immunogens capable of eliciting IgA neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) that recognize tier 2 viral isolates have not yet been identified.

Methods: To determine if stabilized native-like HIV-1 envelope (Env) trimers could generate IgA nAbs, we purified total IgA and IgG from the banked sera of six rhesus macaques that had been found in a previous study to develop serum nAbs after subcutaneous immunization with BG505.

Background: Frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) is associated with an increased risk of some health outcomes.

Objective: We investigated the relationships between knowledge of health risks related to SSB and SSB intake among adults.

Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the 2021 SummerStyles survey.

Metabolic Health, Overweight or Obesity, and Lung Function in Older Australian Adults.

Nutrients

December 2024

School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Newcastle, University Drive, Callaghan, NSW 2308, Australia.

Few studies have explored the links between adiposity, metabolic health, and lung function. This study examined the cross-sectional association between spirometric lung function and overweight/obesity, with and without metabolic abnormalities, in older adults. The research involved 3,318 older adults from the Hunter Community Study Cohort who had a BMI of 18.

Background/objectives: Cerebrospinal infusion studies indicate that cerebrospinal fluid outflow resistance (R) is elevated in normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). These studies assume that the cerebrospinal formation rate (CSF) does not vary during the infusion. If the CSF were to increase during the infusion then the R would be overestimated.
