A comparative trial was made of a therapeutic effect of low-temperature (10-24 degrees C) and hot (37 degrees C) applications of mud in osteoarthrosis (OA) patients. Hot applications are highly effective in OA but are contraindicated for patients with synovitis because of the risk of exacerbations. Low-temperature peloids have advantages over standard hot peloids in the treatment of synovitis, in concomitant lymphovenous insufficiency, cardiovascular diseases.

The Copahue Thermal Center, situated in Neuquén, Argentina, produces natural and matured peloids, which are employed in the prevention and treatment of various osteoarticular and dermatological disorders. The presence of sulfur as a constituent and its thermotherapeutic potential constitute the primary strengths of these peloids. Nevertheless, accessing Copahue is challenging due to its distance from densely populated centers and the snow cover during the winter months in the southern hemisphere.

Effectiveness of peloid therapy in patients with chronic low back pain: a single-blind controlled study.

Int J Biometeorol

November 2021

Department of Medical Ecology and Hydroclimatology, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey.

The aim of this study was to compare peloid therapy in addition to home exercise with home exercise alone in terms of pain, function, quality of life, and depression in patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP). A total of 106 cLBP patients were divided into two equal groups as treatment and control. The peloid therapy group had peloid therapy (with a total of 15 sessions on 5 days per week for 3 weeks duration with 45 °C temperature lasting 30 min/day) + home exercise program.

Santa Lucía peloid is a sediment used in pelotherapy in Cuban primary health care services. Therefore, in addition to physicochemical regulated parameters, other analyses are required to complement their physicochemical characterization and understand potential element mobility, radiological risk, and toxicity as well as likely bioactive compounds present in Santa Lucía peloid. For these purposes, inorganic and organic elements and compounds were considered to evaluate Santa Lucía peloid's quality.

This study investigated changes of systemic and intracardiac hemodynamics under effect of mud application at different temparatures (10, 20-24, and 36 degrees C) in patients with osteoarthrosis and concomitant hypertensive disease and coronary heart disease. It is concluded that combined treatment of this condition should include low-temperature peloidotherapy as a major component since it has the most beneficial effect on general and intracardiac hemodynamics.
