Article Abstract

Introduction: Aggressive behaviours are frequent in the different phases of dementia s evolution. These not only constitute a major problem for the families and the caring staff, but cause fatigue and bur out among them. As these behaviours cannot be predicted or understood, the carers experience very complex and anguishing situations. To avoid subjective factors, Patel and Hope designed and validated a scale named RAGE that can be easily used. OBJECTIVE. Adaptation and validation of the RAGE Scale into Spanish.

Patients And Methods: The scale has been translated, and then retrotranslated to guarantee the semantic equivalence. Afterwards it has been tested on a group of 60 patients (n= 60). All these patients followed the dementia criteria in DSM-IV and their behaviours were considered as relevantly aggressive by their carers.

Results: The total score reliability got an r= 0.93 Spearman coefficient. The internal consistency was determined by Cronbach s alpha (0.90) and the valiability test-retest, analysed by Cohen s kappa, obtained a range from 0.57 to 0.85.

Conclusions: All these elements show similar data in comparison to the original scale validation and therefore this version can be considered adequate for Spanish speaking patients within the Spanish culture.

Background: At the beginning of 2022, Central Europe entered a state of emergency due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Nurses were particularly vulnerable to a decline in their professional quality of life, facing repeated exposure to military trauma, ethical dilemmas, prolonged working hours, and increased stress and fatigue. This study aimed to contribute to our understanding of the potential mediating effect of war-related continuous traumatic stress on the association between moral distress and professional quality of life, including compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, represented by burnout and secondary traumatic stress.

Approximately 20%-40% of individuals with Tourette syndrome (TS) have rage attacks (RAs), which are recurrent, explosive behavioral outbursts that can cause significant functional impairment. Despite the impact of RA in TS, there has been limited research on treatment, and most studies have focused on pharmacologic interventions. Nonpharmacologic interventions have the potential to improve symptoms with fewer side effects.

Diagnostic Confidence of Contrast-Enhanced T1-Weighted MRI for the Detection of Brain Metastases: 3D FSE-vs. 3D GRE-Based Sequences.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

November 2024

From the Department of Neuroradiology (M.G.-M., N.C., V.A.K., K.S., M.C., M.W.), Department of Biostatistics (J.P.L.), Department of Imaging Physics (J.S., P.H., H.-L.L.), Department of Radiation Oncology (C.C., C.W.), Division of Diagnostic Imaging (E.S.), and Department of Neurosurgery (J.W.), The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • A retrospective study assessed the effectiveness of contrast-enhanced T1-weighted 3D SPACE MRI sequences versus 3D FLASH sequences in detecting brain metastases in patients at a single institution.
  • The evaluation involved a review of cases where both imaging techniques were used, with assessments on factors like the number of lesions detected, image quality, and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) by certified neuroradiologists.
  • Results showed that SPACE detected more metastatic lesions and had better image quality and fewer artifacts than FLASH, supporting SPACE as the superior method for brain metastasis detection.

Study Question: Does receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) on the surface membrane of the sperm cell function as a biomarker of low-quality sperm?

Summary Answer: Membrane-bound RAGE at a cellular level directly correlates with low sperm motility, high cell permeability, decreased mitochondrial function, DNA fragmentation, and higher levels of apoptosis.

What Is Known Already: RAGE has previously been measured by ELISA in low-quality sperm in diabetic men and has been shown to correlate with DNA fragmentation (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) assay).

Study Design Size Duration: Semen samples were recovered from 60 non-obese, non-diabetic and non-smoking subjects, washed with fresh media, and analysed directly or purified further by differential gradient centrifugation (DGC) or fractionated by direct swim-up before being analysed for sperm motility and molecular health parameters, including cell membrane permeability, cell death, mitochondrial membrane potential, DNA fragmentation, and RAGE protein expression.

The objective of this study is to examine the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and peripheral blood biomarkers in assessing cognitive function in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). A total of 58 CSVD patients were recruited. Six features of white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) were derived from MRI scans.
