Background: Use of polyclonal anti-hepatitis B surface antigen immunoglobulin (HBIg) has been shown to reduce hepatitis B virus (HBV) recurrence after liver transplantation (LT) and to decrease the frequency of acute cellular rejection (ACR). However, the protective role of HBIg against ACR remains controversial, since HBV infection has been also associated with a lower incidence of ACR.
Aim: To assess the relationship between HBIg immunoprophylaxis and the incidence of rejection after LT.
Methods: 260 patients (158 males, 43 +/- 14 years old) submitted to LT were retrospectively evaluated and divided into three groups, according to the presence of HBsAg and the use of HBIg. Group I was comprised of HBsAg-positive patients (n = 12) that received HBIg for more than 6 months. Group II was comprised of HBsAg-positive patients that historically have not received HBIg or have been treated irregularly for less than 3 months (n = 10). Group III was composed of 238 HBsAg-negative subjects that have not received HBIg.
Results: HBIg-treated patients (group I) had significantly less ACR episodes, when compared to group II and III. No differences between groups II and III were observed.
Conclusions: Long-term HBIg administration contributes independently to reduce the number of ACR episodes after LT.

The detection of anti-hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies contributes to the diagnosis of hepatitis E. The diagnostic suitability of two automated chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIAs, LIAISON MUREX Anti-HEV IgG/Anti-HEV IgM test, DiaSorin) was assessed by comparison with the results of a combination of enzyme immunoassays and immunoblots (Well HEV IgG/IgM ELISA, Line HEV IgG/IgM, MIKROGEN). Samples with a deviating result were analyzed with the WANTAI ELISAs.

Background: We have previously obtained a mouse anti-hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) antibody E6F6 with long-lasting serum HBsAg clearance effects. The E6F6 epitope-based protein CR-T3-SEQ13 (HBsAg aa 113-135) vaccination therapy in cynomolgus monkeys induced long-term polyclonal antibodies-mediated clearance of HBsAg in the HBV transgenic (HBV-Tg) mice.
Methods: We isolated monoclonal antibodies from CR-T3-SEQ13 vaccinated cynomolgus monkeys, compared their therapeutic effects with E6F6, identified their epitopes on HBsAg, determined the pharmacokinetics and studied their physical property.

The anti-hepatitis E virus (HEV) immunoglobulin (Ig) M antibody response is generally regarded as a useful marker for diagnosing primary infection. However, in some cases, this antibody is not detected during the acute phase of infection. An 81-year-old man with stable membranous nephropathy who presented with asymptomatic acute liver dysfunction came to our hospital.

The suggested HCV escape mechanism consisting in the elicitation of antibody (Ab) subpopulations interfering with the neutralizing activity of other Abs has recently been questioned. In particular, it was originally reported that Abs directed against the 436-447 region (epitope II) of HCV/E2 glycoprotein may interfere with the neutralizing Abs directed against the 412-423 region (epitope I) involved in the binding to CD81. In this paper, we investigate on the molecular features of this phenomenon describing an anti-HCV/E2 monoclonal Ab (mAb) (e509) endowed with a weak neutralizing activity, and whose epitope is centered on epitope II.

There is little information on the diverse infectious causes of jaundice and hepatitis in the Asiatic tropics. Serology (hepatitis A, B, C and E, leptospirosis, dengue, rickettsia), antigen tests (dengue), PCR assays (hepatitis A, C and E) and blood cultures (septicaemia) were performed on samples from 392 patients admitted with jaundice or raised transaminases (> or =x3) to Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Laos over 3 years. Conservative definitions suggested diagnoses of dengue (8.
