AI Article Synopsis

  • A study was conducted comparing three leaching tests with varying conditions (liquid/solid ratio, pH, leachant, stirring, and duration) as part of the Analeach project funded by the EU.
  • Four types of fly ash reference materials were analyzed, sourced from the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, to assess their leaching behavior.
  • The effects of different experimental conditions and the material matrix on the release of seven metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) were investigated alongside basic material characterization.

Article Abstract

Comparison of three different leaching tests, each characterized by different conditions, e.g. liquid/solid ratio, pH, leachant, stirring conditions, duration time, has been performed within the activities of Analeach, financed by the European Union in the "Cooperation with third Countries" programme (INCO). The comparison was performed on four highly homogenized fly ash reference materials, of different origin, provided by the Joint Research Centre of Ispra. Seven different elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) were considered in this study. The influence of the main experimental conditions and of the matrix on metal release was studied. Basic characterization of the materials was also performed.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus often leads to bone metabolism disorders, hindering bone regeneration and delaying the healing of bone defects. β-Ecdysone, a plant-derived hormone known for its wide range of physiological activities, possesses hypoglycemic effects and promotes osteogenic differentiation. This study developed a composite PLGA slow-release scaffold loaded with β-ecdysone to enhance its bioavailability through topical administration and to investigate its potential to heal diabetic bone defects.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can effectively stabilize Se oxyanions, yet the thermal stability of Se oxyanions incorporated into LDHs remains unclear. In this study, calcination products of three types of LDHs loaded with SeO or SeO were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS) and leaching tests. It has been found that SeO can be reduced to SeO in the Fe-containing LDHs after calcination at temperatures above 450 °C.

This study introduces a sustainable approach for enhancing the fire retardancy and smoke suppression of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites, contributing to addressing one of the major challenges in biocomposites that limits their application in various engineering fields, as automotive and construction sectors. Flax fibers (FF) were surface functionalized with a novel organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardant (FR), offering a sustainable bioinspired approach that mitigates potential mechanical properties impairment and FR leaching, which can cause environmental concerns and reduced composite durability. The process involves a three-step coating procedure.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a monomer of plastic that can leach into water from scratched containers when used for an extended period. Arsenic (As) is an environmental toxicant, and people are exposed to both arsenic and BPA through drinking water and through scratched plastic containers used in contaminated areas. However, the combined effects of As and BPA on locomotor performance and neurobehavioral changes are yet to be investigated.

Compared with zero-valent iron, iron sulfide has more diverse reactive species and higher reductivity, but it is still prone to be gradually deactivated due to various passivation factors. In this study, a novel reductive material (BMMW@OA) was prepared by ball milling of mackinawite (MW) as raw material and oxalic acid (OA) as modifier, so as to simultaneously improve its reductivity and stability by continuous releasing reductive species and maintaining freshness of the material surface. The BMMW@OA (w/w of MW/OA = 4/1) effectively removed Cr(Ⅵ) from water with wide pH adaptability.
