Class I glutaredoxins (GRXs) are nearly ubiquitous proteins that catalyse the glutathione (GSH)-dependent reduction of mainly glutathionylated substrates. In land plants, a third class of GRXs has evolved (class III). Class III GRXs regulate the activity of TGA transcription factors through yet unexplored mechanisms.

Microbial secondary metabolites are crucial in plant-microorganism interactions, regulating plant growth and stress responses. In this study, we found that cyclo(-Phe-Pro), a proline-based cyclic dipeptide secreted by many microorganisms, alleviated aluminum toxicity in wheat roots by increasing root growth, decreasing callose deposition, and decreasing Al accumulation. Cyclo(-Phe-Pro) also significantly reduced Al-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) with HO, O, and •OH levels decreasing by 19.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as phenanthrene (PHE), are common pollutants found in coastal areas where shrimp farming is developed. Even though PAHs can have adverse effects on physiology, shrimp can detoxify and metabolize toxic compounds and neutralize the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during this process. This requires the activation of multiple antioxidant enzymes, including peroxiredoxin 6 (Prx6).

Excessively high or synchronized neuronal activity in the brain is the underlying cause of epilepsy, a condition of the central nervous system. Epilepsy is caused mostly by an imbalance in the activity of inhibitory and excitatory neural networks. Recurrent or prolonged seizures lead to neuronal death, which in turn promotes epileptogenesis and epileptic seizures.

The oncogene and drug metabolism enzyme glutathione S-transferase P (GSTP) is also a GSH-dependent chaperone of signal transduction and transcriptional proteins with key role in liver carcinogenesis. In this study, we explored this role of GSTP in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) investigating the possible interaction of this protein with one of its transcription factor and metronome of the cancer cell redox, namely the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Expression, cellular distribution, and function as glutathionylation factor of GSTP1-1 isoform were investigated in the mouse model of N-nitrosodiethylamine (DEN)-induced HCC and in vitro in human HCC cell lines.
