Background: Senility influences fertility in women and companion animals, especially horses.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effect of aging in horses on the daily changes in the dominant follicle (DF) dynamics and hemodynamics, antimüllerian hormone (AMH), enzymes, antioxidants, and ovarian hormones during the estrous cycle.

Methods: Ovaries of old mares ( = 5, age >20 years) and young native mares ( = 6, age <10 years) were scanned during 6 different estrous cycles from March 2022 to August 2023 with Doppler ultrasound.

The penetration efficiency of a dissolved model drug into hair follicles depends on the concentration of added nanoparticles.

Drug Deliv Transl Res

October 2024

Center of Experimental and Applied Cutaneous Physiology, Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Corporate Member of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Charitéplatz 1, 10117, Berlin, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Hair follicles are being studied as effective delivery systems for drugs to enhance skin penetration, utilizing the ratchet effect created by interactions between hair shafts, the outer skin layer, and nanoparticles.
  • Research showed that adding nanoparticles to formulations allows for deeper transport of small and large molecules into hair follicles, with a focus on fluorescein sodium as a model drug.
  • A 4% nanoparticle concentration significantly improved drug transport efficiency compared to 2%, while increasing to 8% did not enhance penetration depth, and 4 Hz circular motion massage proved more effective than 100 Hz oscillating massage for optimal delivery.

Effect of intrafollicular administration of PGE2 or PGF2α in early estrus on ovulation, hemorrhagic anovulatory follicles formation, progesterone secretion and pregnancy outcome in the mare.

Theriogenology

December 2024

Equine Fertility Group, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universidad Cardenal Herrera-CEU, CEU Universities, Alfara del Patriarca, Valencia, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effects of intrafollicular treatments with PGE2 and PGF2α on ovulation and progesterone production in mares during early estrus.
  • In Experiment 1, PGE2 led to successful ovulation in all treated mares within 24 hours, while PGF2α resulted in more instances of hemorrhagic anovulatory follicles and lower progesterone levels.
  • In Experiment 2, a higher percentage of control mares became pregnant compared to those treated with PGE2, indicating that while PGE2 triggered ovulation, it negatively impacted pregnancy rates.

Progesterone (P4) is predicted to act as a negative regulatory hormone for oocyte maturation events; however, its local effects during follicular development remain poorly understood in bovine. The complex process of oocyte meiosis progression is dependent on cellular communication among follicular cells. Besides, the breakdown of this communication, mainly between cumulus cells (CC) and oocyte, through the retraction of cumulus projections connecting these cells can impact oocyte maturation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the superestimulatory and superovulatory responses of cattle treated with corifollitropin-alpha, a long-acting human recombinant FSH (rhFSH). In the first and second experiments, we used Nelore (Bos indicus) heifers previously submitted to follicular wave suppression by active immunization against GnRH. In Experiment 1 (a dose-response study), heifers (n = 20) were randomly allocated into five groups, which received placebo (saline) or a single sc dose of 7.
