Article Synopsis
  • Post-mortem CT (PMCT) is becoming a popular, non-invasive option for adult death investigations, addressing pathologist shortages while respecting cultural needs.
  • The article discusses various PMCT service structures tailored to different coronial jurisdictions, which face challenges like limited imaging access and logistical issues.
  • It further explores operational models for PMCT services, including who leads them, types of CT units used, and reporting structures, offering real-world examples for effective implementation.

Identification score for robust and secure identification using ante- and post-mortem skull CT scans.

Int J Legal Med

November 2024

Institute of Psychiatry and Neuroscience of Paris (IPNP), Université Paris Cité, INSERM U1266, 75014, Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Paranasal sinuses can help identify individuals by comparing post-mortem CT (PMCT) scans with ante-mortem CT (AMCT) scans, but security issues arise when sharing raw AMCT images for suspected identities.
  • The study aimed to create an identification score, called IDScore, by analyzing CT slices from two successive AMCTs and assessing their similarities among radiologists.
  • The validated IDScore method achieved perfect identification rates (100% sensitivity and specificity) without needing to access full AMCT images, addressing ethical concerns during identity verification.

Sex estimation using skull silhouette images from postmortem computed tomography by deep learning.

Sci Rep

September 2024

Medical Quantum Science Course, Department of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan.

Prompt personal identification is required during disasters that can result in many casualties. To rapidly estimate sex based on skull structure, this study applied deep learning using two-dimensional silhouette images, obtained from head postmortem computed tomography (PMCT), to enhance the outline shape of the skull. We investigated the process of sex estimation using silhouette images viewed from different angles and majority votes.

Background: The aim of the study was to explore the clinical efficacy of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with percutaneous microwave coagulation therapy (PMCT) for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Methods: Eighty-three advanced HCC patients were divided into the experimental group (TACE + PMCT, 57 cases) and the control group (TACE alone, 26 cases). They received TACE treatment first, and computed tomography (CT) or hepatic artery angiography was performed 3 - 4 weeks after each treatment.

Background: Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) is a forensic scientific discipline used to resolve criminal events. By studying the size, shape, and distribution of the bloodstains that constitute one or more bloodstain patterns, it is possible to determine the physical events responsible for their creation, as well as the positions and movements of the victim and, in cases of homicide, the perpetrator during the act.

Materials And Methods: BPA analysis was applied as a support in the reconstruction of the event dynamics in four forensic cases, in addition to the data collected during on-site inspections and instrumental investigations including PMCT, autopsies, histological, and toxicological analyses.
