[Biologic monitoring of occupational and non-occupational exposure to pesticides].

Ann Ist Super Sanita

Unità Funzionale Igiene e Tossicologia, ASL 7, Siena.

Published: August 2002

Occupationally or otherwise, much of the population is exposed to pesticides. To obtain information on exposure levels, biological monitoring is often the best choice because it provides data that reflects total exposure by all routes. Biological monitoring has been used to evaluate exposure in agricultural and industrial environments, in subjects poisoned by accidental or voluntary contact, in volunteers for pharmacokinetic studies and in the general population. This paper is based on 100 studies published on this topic and reviews exposure indices for the main classes of pesticides. Methods of sampling and conservation of samples are outlined, together with the analytical procedures used. For compounds such as organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides, ethylenebisdithiocarbamate fungicides, and phenoxyacetic herbicides, the results of studies on the general population and groups of occupationally exposed workers are reported.

Energetic constraints drive the decline of a sentinel polar bear population.

Science

January 2025

Laboratory of Quantitative Global Change Ecology, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Toronto Scarborough, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Human-driven Arctic warming and resulting sea ice loss have been associated with declines in several polar bear populations. However, quantifying how individual responses to environmental change integrate and scale to influence population dynamics in polar bears has yet to be achieved. We developed an individual-based bioenergetic model and hindcast population dynamics across 42 years of observed sea ice conditions in Western Hudson Bay, a region undergoing rapid environmental change.

This work focused on the biotreatment of wastewater and contaminated soil in a used oil recycling plant located in Bizerte. A continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and a trickling filter (TF) were used to treat stripped and collected wastewater, respectively. The CSTR was started up and stabilized for 90 days.

Temperature and light dual-responsive hydrogels for anti-inflammation and wound repair monitoring.

Wound healing is a complex and dynamic biological process that requires meticulous management to ensure optimal outcomes. Traditional wound dressings, such as gauze and bandages, although commonly used, often fall short in their frequent need for replacement, lack of real-time monitoring and absence of anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which can lead to increased risk of infection and delayed healing. Here, we address these limitations by introducing an innovative hydrogel dressing, named PHDNN6, to combine wireless Bluetooth temperature monitoring and light-triggered nitric oxide (NO) release to enhance wound healing and management.

Background: Cocaine intoxication and abuse is a worldwide problem that can be the cause of numerous acute medical complications, including severe acute hepatitis. Although these cases are scarce, they are extremely serious and may lead to liver transplantation or death. Management of toxic hepatitis, once the causative agent has been discontinued, is essentially symptomatic, based on clinical and biological monitoring and prevention of complications related to acute hepatitis.

Transcriptomics and psychotherapy: An integrative review.

Brain Behav Immun Health

Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology, Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Gold-standard psychotherapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) show beneficial effects, but patient responses vary, indicating a need to predict and optimize treatment efficacy. Gene expression analysis may offer insights into the interplay between psychosocial processes and biological factors that impact psychopathology and therapeutic response. This integrative review examines 17 studies that assess gene expression in the context of psychotherapy, highlighting innovative frameworks for incorporating gene expression analysis in diagnosis, predicting treatment response, and monitoring treatment progress.
