Published: March 2002

The possibility of observing a difference in the high-resolution NMR spectra of two enantiomers as due to parity nonconservation is discussed. Proposals to minimize the NMR linewidths are presented. It is concluded that, using the ultra- high-resolution technique, a difference could be observed with high Z value spin one- half nuclei such as Pt, T1, Xe. Other nuclei can also be considered.

It is usually asserted that physical Hamiltonians for fermions must contain an even number of fermion operators. This is indeed true in electronic structure theory. However, when the Jordan-Wigner (JW) transformation is used to map physical spin Hamiltonians to Hamiltonians of spinless fermions, terms that contain an odd number of fermion operators may appear.

Natural chiral amino acids typically adopt an L structural configuration. While a preference for specific molecular chiralities is observed throughout biology and cellular chemistry, the origins of this preference are unclear. In a previous report the origin of enantiomeric selectivity was analyzed in terms of an "RNA World" model, and a pathway to a chiral preference for d-ribose was proposed based on the autocatalytic transformation of glyceraldehyde as a precursor to the formation of sugars.

Parity of polaritons in a molecular aggregate coupled to a single-mode cavity.

We investigated the parity of polaritons, particularly the parity of topological polariton states resulting from light fields, in a molecular aggregate with uniform and alternating excitation transfer interaction coupled to a single-mode cavity. We find that all polariton states are with even parity, in terms of parity conservation, and the even-parity edge states of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with alternating excitation transfer interaction induce even-parity topological polariton states. Thus, the odd-parity edge states are almost unaffected.

Parity non-conservation (PNC) due to the weak interaction is predicted to give rise to enantiomer dependent vibrational constants in chiral molecules, but the phenomenon has so far eluded experimental observation. The enhanced sensitivity of molecules to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) has led to substantial advances in molecular precision spectroscopy, and these may be applied to PNC searches as well. Specifically, trapped molecular ion experiments leverage the universality of trapping charged particles to optimize the molecular ion species studied toward BSM searches, but in searches for PNC, only a few chiral molecular ion candidates have been proposed so far.

Lift force in odd compressible fluids.

Phys Rev E

August 2023

Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Amsterdam, 1090 GL Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

When a body moves through a fluid, it can experience a force orthogonal to its movement called lift force. Odd viscous fluids break parity and time-reversal symmetry, suggesting the existence of an odd lift force on tracer particles, even at vanishing Reynolds numbers and for symmetric geometries. It was previously found that an incompressible odd fluid cannot induce lift force on a tracer particle with no-slip boundary conditions, making signatures of odd viscosity in the two-dimensional bulk elusive.
