Is There an Association between Bell Palsy in Pediatric Patients and COVID-19?

Int Arch Otorhinolaryngol

January 2025

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt.

Bell palsy (BP) is an acquired, idiopathic facial palsy linked to lower motor neuron malfunction of the seventh cranial nerve. Several studies have identified BP as one of the many neuropathies that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients have developed, while other studies disagree.  To study if there is an association between BP in pediatric patients and COVID-19, and to examine the pattern of recovery in all pediatric cases of BP during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stroke and Neurological Disorders Center, Kyung Hee University College of Korean Medicine, Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Background: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rapid-onset disease caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. Since most standardized treatments for GBS focus on acute phase treatment, there are limitations to the rehabilitation and management of general conditions. In East Asian countries, herbal medicine has been used to treat GBS and aid rehabilitation.

Trends, global comparisons, and projections of early onset colorectal cancer burden in China based on GBD study 2021.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, The Drum Tower Clinical Medical College, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, China.

This study aimed to analyze the trends of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) among individuals aged 15 to 49 in China from 1990 to 2021 and compare them with global patterns using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. The analysis focused on age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR), prevalence rates (ASPR), mortality rates (ASMR), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Joinpoint regression was used to determine the average annual percentage change (AAPC), and the ARIMA model was employed to forecast trends from 2022 to 2050.

Intra-Mesopore Immunoassay Based on Core-Shell Structured Magnetic Hierarchically Porous ZIFs.

January 2025

Key Laboratory for Ultrafine Materials of Ministry of Education, School of Materials Science and Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai 200237, China.

It is crucial yet challenging to sensitively quantify low-abundance biomarkers in blood for early screening and diagnosis of various diseases. Herein, an analytical model of intra-mesopore immunoassay (IMIA) was proposed, which was competent to examine various biomarkers at the femtomolar level. The success is rooted in the design of an innovative superparamagnetic core-shell structure with FeO nanoparticles (NPs) at the core and hierarchically porous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks as a shell (FeO@HPZIF-8), achieved through a soft-template directed self-assembly coupled with confinement growth mechanism.
