Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), an X-linked neuromuscular disorder, characterised by progressive immobility, chronic inflammation and premature death, is caused by the loss of the mechano-transducing signalling molecule, dystrophin. In non-contracting cells, such as neurons, dystrophin is likely to have a functional role in synaptic plasticity, anchoring post-synaptic receptors. Dystrophin-expressing hippocampal neurons are key to cognitive functions such as emotions, learning and the consolidation of memories.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) constitutes 90% of liver cancer cases and ranks as the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality, necessitating urgent development of alternative therapies. Lactoferrin (LF), a natural iron-binding glycoprotein with reported anticancer effects, is investigated for its potential in liver cancer treatment, an area with limited existing studies. This study focuses on evaluating LF's anti-liver cancer effects on HCC cells and assessing the preventive efficacy of oral LF administration in a murine model.

AT1 receptor blockers (ARBs) are commonly used drugs to treat cardiovascular disease and hypertension, but research on their impact on brain disorders is unattainable. Valsartan (VAL) is a drug that specifically blocks AT1 receptor. Despite the previous evidence for VAL to provide neuroprotection in case of ischemic reperfusion injury, evaluation of their potential in mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction that causes neuronal cell death and neurobehavioral impairment remains unknown.
