Solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries (SSLMBs) are considered as one of the most promising next-generation battery technologies due to their high energy density and intrinsic safety. However, interfacial issues such as side reactions and Li dendrite growth severely hinder the practical application of SSLMBs. In this contribution, we proposed a cationic built-in electrostatic field to drive the generation of an anion-derived dual-layered solid electrolyte interphase (SEI).

The photopolymerization-induced microphase separation (photo-PIMS) process involving a reactive polymer block was implemented to fabricate nanostructured quasi-solid polymer electrolytes (QSPEs) for use in lithium metal batteries (LMBs). This innovative one-pot fabrication enhances interfacial properties in LMBs by enabling nanostructuring of QSPE directly onto the electrodes. This process also allows for customization of QSPE structural dimensions by tweaking the architecture and molar mass of poly[(oligo ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate--styrene] (P(OEGMA--S)) macromolecular chain transfer agent.

Due to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness, aqueous zinc-ion batteries are considered a potential alternative to Li-ion batteries. However, dendrite growth and parasitic reactions of water molecules limit their practical applications. Herein, an ionic liquid additive, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium Bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (BMImFSI), is introduced to regulate the electrical double layer (EDL).

Increasing the upper cut-off voltage (UCV) enhances the specific energy of Li-ion batteries (LIBs), but is accompanied by higher capacity fade as a result of electrode cross-talk, i.e., transition metals (TM) dissolution from cathode and deposition on anode, finally triggering high surface area lithium (HSAL) formation due to locally enhanced resistance.

The development of high-energy-density Li metal batteries is limited by the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites and an unstable Li/electrolyte interface during long-term Li plating/stripping. In this work, using high-concentration fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) electrolyte, an LiF-rich interface layer was generated on the Li metal surface. This LiF-rich interface layer could effectively inactivate the high reactivity of the Li metal surface and suppress lithium dendrite growth, forming a uniform and dense structure at the Li/electrolyte interface to stabilize Li metal batteries.
