Chitosan/poly(aminopropylsiloxane) hybrid films were obtained by blending 3-(aminopropyl)siloxane oligomers (pAPS) with chitosan (CHI). The pAPS oligomers were prepared by the sol-gel method starting from 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane. These hybrids were characterized by chemical, spectroscopic and morphological methods. Scanning electron micrographs of hybrid films of different composition revealed an organized microscopic pattern suggesting the existence of systematic interactions among their components. Comparison of the thermal stabilities and X-ray diffraction patterns as well as FT-IR spectra of the films with those of the pure components revealed that nanocomposites were formed. Similar studies of films including lithium perchlorate, as a third component, showed that addition of certain amount of lithium ions affected the structure of the CHI/pAPS films. When addition of the lithium salt exceeded the homogeneous incorporation limit, a little excess generated anisotropically oriented patterns in the hybrid films.

Inspired by the properties of natural chitin, the present work provides the first solid foundation for growing conformal ultrathin antibacterial films of organic chitin through a solvent-free molecular layer deposition (MLD) process. This work establishes the initial groundwork for growing biomimetic hybrid cuticles by combining sugar-type molecules with vapor-phase metal-organic precursors, which we term metallochitins or, more generally, metallosaccharides. The MLD process, featuring mild temperatures and solvent-free conditions, provides exceptional conformality and thickness precision, ensuring highly conformal coatings on diverse high aspect ratio substrates.

Planar 1D photonic crystals (1DPhCs), owing to their photonic bandgaps (PBGs) formed by unique structural interference, are widely utilized in light protection applications. Multifunctional coatings that integrate various light management functions are highly desired. In this study, we present the fabrication of dual-PBG 1DPhCs with high reflectance in both the blue and near-infrared (NIR) regions.

Along with the development of miniaturization, integration, and high power of electronic chips in the 5G and artificial intelligence era and their urgent need for technologies enabled to solve high heat flux dissipation in limited space, investigating bioinspired extreme superwettability surfaces with high-efficiency condensation heat transfer (CHT) performance has attracted great interest in academic and industrial communities. Compared with filmwise condensation of flat hydrophilic surfaces featured with continuous liquid films, dropwise condensation of flat hydrophobic surfaces is a more efficient type of energy transport way. However, discrete condensate drops can only shed off the hydrophobic flat surfaces under gravity until their sizes reach the capillary length of liquid, e.

Efficient Orange Light-Emitting Diodes from Nontoxic Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Copper Halides Enabled by Nonionic Surfactant Chemisorption.

Ternary copper halides with an eco-friendly property have emerged as attractive candidates to replace toxic lead-containing perovskites for light-emitting diodes (LEDs), yet achieving long-wavelength electroluminescence remains unexplored. Herein, we report the first realization of orange-emitting LEDs (595 nm) based on nontoxic organic-inorganic PEACuI (PEA = β-phenylethylamine) films enabled by a nonionic surfactant poly(propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether) (APPG) chemisorption. Experimental and theoretical analyses rationalize that the APPG additive has strong chemisorption with the Cu-I framework within the grain boundaries of PEACuI films, which not only improves the film's morphology but also passivates the iodine vacancy defects.
