In this report we present a patient with unilateral masseteric hypertrophy who used anabolic steroids and was chewing entirely unilaterally for 1 month. Computed tomography and histologic examination were used to confirm the diagnosis. The combined action of unilateral mastication and anabolic steroid use is probably responsible for the rapid development of unilateral masseteric hypertrophy.

Background: Some facial morphological changes may occur in some patients after botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection for the treatment of masseteric hypertrophy. The aim of this study was to investigate the morphological changes that occurred on mandibular margin.
Methods: This retrospective analysis included 43 patients (86 lateral cases) who received BTX-A injections for masseter hypertrophy.

The mammalian skull is very malleable and has notably radiated into highly diverse morphologies, fulfilling a broad range of functional needs. Although gnawing is relatively common in mammals, this behavior and its associated morphology are diagnostic features for rodents. These animals possess a very versatile and highly mechanically advantageous masticatory apparatus, which, for instance, allowed caviomorph rodents to colonize South America during the Mid-Eocene and successfully radiate in over 200 extant species throughout most continental niches.

Introduction: Botulinum toxin type A causes muscle paralysis and is widely used in the masticatory muscle for stomatognathic diseases, such as temporomandibular disorder, bruxism, or masseteric hypertrophy. Nonetheless, its muscular effect remains unclear. Better understanding could aid improved use and perhaps new indications, particularly in dentofacial orthopaedics and orthognathic surgery.

Background: Despite the widespread use of botulinum toxin (BTX) injection for the treatment of masseter muscle hypertrophy (MMH), there is no standard treatment option.
Objective: We report the efficacy and safety for BTX in MMH over a period of 48 weeks.
Methods: In double-blinded, placebo-controlled phase 3 trials, 180 patients (randomized 1:1) received treatment with placebo (normal saline) or prabotulinumtoxinA (48 units).
