[Hunger and intellectual development].

Fortschr Med

Published: October 1979

Severe hunger in infancy and early childhood is associated with reduced head size, reduction in cell number and impaired chemical composition of the brain. Intellectual deficits correlating with malnutrition persist into later life. Because malnutrition and poor socio-economic conditions often exist together the additional unfavorable influence or lack of environmental stimuli on intellectual development has to be taken in account.

Objective: Considering limited evidence on diagnostics of genetic obesity in adults, we evaluated phenotypes of adults with genetic obesity. Additionally, we assessed the applicability of Endocrine Society (ES) recommendations for genetic testing in pediatric obesity.

Methods: We compared clinical features, including age of onset of obesity and appetite, between adults with non-syndromic monogenic obesity (MO), adults with syndromic obesity (SO), and adults with common obesity (CO) as control patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder caused by different problems on chromosome 15, affecting how some genes work.
  • People with PWS often feel super hungry all the time, can become very overweight, and may have other health and learning issues.
  • The review explores how different genetic causes of PWS can lead to specific health problems and looks for ways to improve diagnosis and treatments for those affected.

Challenges for crop improvement.

Emerg Top Life Sci

Department of Plant Breeding (VF), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Box 190 Sundsvagen 10, SE 23422 Lomma, Sweden.

The genetic improvement of crops faces the significant challenge of feeding an ever-increasing population amidst a changing climate, and when governments are adopting a 'more with less' approach to reduce input use. Plant breeding has the potential to contribute to the United Nations Agenda 2030 by addressing various sustainable development goals (SDGs), with its most profound impact expected on SDG2 Zero Hunger. To expedite the time-consuming crossbreeding process, a genomic-led approach for predicting breeding values, targeted mutagenesis through gene editing, high-throughput phenomics for trait evaluation, enviromics for including characterization of the testing environments, machine learning for effective management of large datasets, and speed breeding techniques promoting early flowering and seed production are being incorporated into the plant breeding toolbox.
