Despite the enormous significance of malaria parasites for global health, some basic features of their ultrastructure remain obscure. Here, we apply high-resolution volumetric electron microscopy to examine and compare the ultrastructure of the transmissible male and female sexual blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum as well as the more intensively studied asexual blood stages revisiting previously described phenomena in 3D. In doing so, we challenge the widely accepted notion of a single mitochondrion by demonstrating the presence of multiple mitochondria in gametocytes.

Fast, nondestructive three-dimensional (3D) imaging of live suspension cells remains challenging without substrate treatment or fixation, precluding scalable single-cell morphometry with minimal alterations. While optical sectioning techniques achieve 3D live cell imaging, lateral versus depth resolution differences further complicate analysis. We present a scalable microfluidic method capable of 3D fluorescent isotropic imaging of live, nonadherent cells suspended inside picoliter droplets with high-speed single-cell volumetric readout (800 to 1,200 slices in 5 to 8 s) and near-diffraction limit resolution (~216 nm).

The translation of silver-based nanotechnology 'from bench to bedside' requires a deep understanding of the molecular aspects of its biological action, which remains controversial at low concentrations and non-spherical morphologies. Here, we present a hemocompatibility approach based on the effect of the distinctive electronic charge distribution in silver nanoparticles (nanosilver) on blood components. According to spectroscopic, volumetric, microscopic, dynamic light scattering measurements, pro-coagulant activity tests, and cellular inspection, we determine that at extremely low nanosilver concentrations (0.

Background And Aims: Ciclosporin (CSA) is an immunosuppressive agent that requires therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). High partitioning in erythrocytes indicates that whole blood (WB) is a suitable matrix for CSA determination. Alternative sampling strategies, such as volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS), are novel possibilities for blood collection during TDM for various analytes, including immunosuppressants.

A 70-year-old woman with a 6-year history of asthma, a 12-year history of diabetes mellitus, and who did not smoke presented to the pulmonology clinic with dyspnea and cough. Chest CT performed 5 years earlier for similar symptoms revealed multiple pulmonary nodules. However, she was lost to follow-up before the work-up was concluded.
