A 3D finite element model (FEM) of the mammalian utricular otolith corresponding to spatial structure, shape and size of the otolith from the guinea pig was developed. The otolithic membrane (OM) was considered as consisting of gel and otoconial layers. The macular surface was approximated as a plane. The deformation of the OM under static loads such as gravity and the change of endolymphatic pressure was analyzed using the FEM for different mechanical parameters of the OM and for different gravity vector orientations. The analytical dependence of OM displacements caused by the acceleration parallel to the macular plane was obtained. By comparison of the results of calculations with the known experimental data Young's modulus of the gel layer was estimated to be of order of 10 N/m(2). It was shown that static loads result in 3D local otolith displacements inhomogeneously distributed along the macular surface and across otolith thickness. Their distribution depends on the geometrical and mechanical parameters of the otolith components. The influences of the finite size of the OM, the Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and thickness of the gel layer on the local displacements distribution of the OM were analyzed. The results of simulation suggest that: a) the Young's modulus of the thin lowest part of the gel layer adjacent to the macular surface is much smaller than that of the rest of the OM; b) the structure of the border is designed to reduce the spatial inhomogeneity of the gel layer displacement; c) a change of the endolymphatic pressure may result in significant deformation of the OM.

This report documents complications in false pilchard Harengula clupeola and scad Decapterus macarellus associated with a salinomycin (60 mg kg-1) and amprolium (100 mg kg-1) gel feed treatment, along with prolonged temperature increase, for an Enteromyxum leei outbreak in a salt water, mixed species, public aquarium exhibit. Shortly after administration, a mass mortality event ensued where hundreds of false pilchards and a few scad died. Medicated gel feed was noted within the gastrointestinal tracts of all affected fish.

Synovial exudation, creeping, and lubrication failure in natural cartilage under a long-term normal loading can be counteracted by a tribo-rehydration (sliding-induced rehydration) phenomenon. Hydrogels, as porous materials, can also restore interfacial lubrication and overcome creep through this strategy. At appropriate sliding velocities, water molecules at the interface contact inlet are driven by hydrodynamic pressures into the porous network to resist creep extrusion.

SnO₂ is a widely used electron transport layer (ETL) material in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and its design and optimization are essential for achieving efficient and stable PSCs. In this study, the in situ formation of a chain entanglement gel polymer electrolyte is reported in an aqueous phase, integrated with SnO₂ as the ETL. Based on the self-polymerization of 3-[[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethylammonium]propane-1-sulfonic acid (DAES) in an aqueous environment, combining the catalytic effect of LiCl (as a Lewis acid) with the salting-out effect, and the introduction of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the other polymer chain, a chain entanglement gelled SnO (G-SnO) structure is successfully constructed with a wide range of functions.

Self-powered broadband photodetectors (SPBPDs) hold great potential for next-generation optoelectronic applications, but their performance is often limited by interface defects that impair charge transport and increase recombination losses. In this work, we report the enhancement of the photodetection efficiency of SPBPDs by partially substituting copper (Cu) with silver (Ag) in kesterite CuZnSnS (ACZTS) thin films. Varying Ag concentrations (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%) are incorporated into the CZTS layer, forming a TiO/ACZTS heterojunction in superstrate configuration fabricated via a low-cost sol-gel spin-coating technique with low-temperature open air annealing avoiding conventional postdeposition sulfurization or selenization.

Presently, researchers are placing emphasis on microwave absorption coating design while neglecting the research on materials that integrate both microwave absorption performance and mechanical properties. Here, robust FeSiAl/PEEK composites were prepared by a series process, including post ball-milling annealing, sol-gel method, and hot pressing. A detailed analysis of the electromagnetic (EM) parameters reveals the significant effects of morphology, filling ratio, and microstructure of FeSiAl on EM losses under a wide-temperature range.
