Reactions of the anionic platinum complexes (NBu(4))[Pt(PPh(3))(C(6)F(5))(2)(OCOCH(3))] (1) and (NBu(4))(2)[Pt(C(6)F(5))(3)(S)] (S = methanol or acetone) with Tl(I) salts afford the heterometallic neutral cis-[(C(6)F(5))(2)(PPh(3))Pt(&mgr;(2)-OOCCH(3))Tl] (2) and the dimeric dianionic (NBu(4))(2)[{(C(6)F(5))(3)Pt}(2){(&mgr;(2)-O,&mgr;(3)-O'CCH(3))Tl}(2)] (3). Both complexes display Pt-Tl bonds with bond lengths of 2.994(1) Å and 2.884(1) Å, respectively, the latter being the shortest Pt-Tl(I) distance reported so far. The structure of both compounds has been established by X-ray studies.

Exploiting F NMR in a Multiplexed Assay for Small GTPase Activity.

Small GTPases (smG) are a 150-member family of proteins, comprising five subfamilies: Ras, Rho, Arf, Rab, and Ran-GTPases. These proteins function as molecular switches, toggling between two distinct nucleotide-bound states. Using traditional multidimensional heteronuclear NMR, even for single smGs, numerous experiments, high protein concentrations, expensive isotope labeling, and long analysis times are necessary.

1,3-Diphosphaallenes are a new class of heavier heteroallenes and show a fascinating chemical behavior and reactivity. Herein we report on the room temperature transformation of gallaphosphene LGa(OCP)PGaL 1 (L = HC[C(Me)N(Ar)], Ar = 2,6-i-PrCH) to the six-membered metallaheterocycle LGa(PCP)OGaL 2 featuring a LGa-substituted 1,3-diphosphaallene unit. The possible mechanism of formation of 2 is supported by quantum chemical calculations, which revealed that the formation of 2 is energetically more favorable ( 2 kcal mol) than the formation of 1 at ambient temperature.

Balance between Association and Dissociation Rate Constants Determines Morphology and Property of Amyloid Fibrils.

A parallel dimeric Aβ(1-40) peptide was prepared, and its structural and fibrillogenic characteristics were examined. The covalent linking of the peptide strongly facilitated the spontaneous formation of thioflavin-T-active, fibrillar aggregates rich in β strands without a lag phase. However, the aggregates formed by the dimeric peptide did not exhibit "seeding activity" to catalyze the formation of amyloid fibrils by wild-type Aβ(1-40) molecules.

Photosystem II: light-dependent oscillation of ligand composition at its active site.

Acta Crystallogr D Struct Biol

December 2024

Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Yale University, New Haven, CT 06520-8114, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research challenges previous findings about the number of oxygen ligands in the CaMn cofactor of the oxygen-evolving center (OEC) in photosystem II of Thermosynechococcus vulcanus.
  • Using advanced electron-density maps, it was observed that the number of oxygen ligands varies from three to five, depending on the state of the OEC and exposure to light.
  • These findings indicate a potential mechanism for converting water-bound oxygen atoms into molecular oxygen during the photosynthetic process.

Laboratoire de Cristallographie-Themodynamique, Faculté de Chimie, USTHB, BP 32 El-Alia Bab Ezzouar, Algiers, 16111, Algeria.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reports the synthesis and structural analysis of a new heteronuclear oxalate compound created using iron and sodium salts, oxalic acid, and DMF in an aqueous solution.
  • This compound, classified as dimethylammonium tris(oxalato)ferrate(III), features a unique layered structure where iron is coordinated by oxalate ligands and sodium adopts various coordination numbers.
  • The stability of the structure is supported by hydrogen bonds and ionic interactions, and upon thermal decomposition, the compound ultimately breaks down to form NaFeO.
