A new series of calix[4]arenes, diametrically bridged at the upper rim with pyridino systems, has been synthesized. The shape, rigidity, and chemical structure of the bridge influence the host-guest complexation properties of these systems in solution toward several neutral molecules having acidic C-H bonds. Additionally, selective complexation of methylammonium tosylate in comparison with other ammonium salts has been observed and the strength of this complexation enhanced by electron-donor ability of the p-substituent on the pyridine moiety of the calixarene host. X-ray crystal structures of endo complexes of host 5with malononitrile and nitromethane have been resolved, verifying specific C-H bonding with the hard oxygen and nitrogen atoms of the bridge and the soft aromatic ring of the calixarene.

Disruption of cholinesterases and, as a consequence, increased levels of acetylcholine lead to serious disturbances in the functioning of the nervous system, including death. The need for rapid administration of an antidote to restore esterase activity is critical, but practical implementation of this is often difficult. One promising solution may be the development of antidote delivery systems that will release the drug only when acetylcholine levels are elevated.

The correlation between clinical outcomes and preoperative/postoperative measures of the lateral center-edge angle (LCEA) will help establish the cutoff values for this measurement and determine whether to obtain it from the lateral acetabular rim (LCEAR) or the lateral end of the sourcil (LCEAS). The hypothesis was that the LCEAS would be more sensitive than the LCEAR. An upper cutoff value of LCEA could predict better functional outcomes in FAI patients.

The NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Mission has collected samples of rock, regolith, and atmosphere within the Noachian-aged Jezero Crater, once the site of a delta-lake system with a high potential for habitability and biosignature preservation. Between sols 109 and 1,088 of the mission, 27 sample tubes have been sealed, including witness tubes. Each sealed sample tube has been collected along with detailed documentation provided by the Perseverance instrument payload, preserving geological and environmental context.

The Incidence and Aetiology of Maxillofacial Trauma and Concomitant Traumatic Brain Injury in a Johannesburg Tertiary Hospital.

J Craniofac Surg

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Objective: To investigate the incidence and etiology of maxillofacial trauma (MFT) and its association with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Background: Anecdotal evidence suggests that there is an association between MFT and TBI and that higher incidences of TBI are associated with frontal bone and mid-facial fractures. Despite the large volume of maxillofacial facial fractures treated in the authors' unit, no study has been undertaken to establish the relationship between TBI and maxillofacial fractures.

Non-gestational choriocarcinoma is an extremely rare and highly aggressive malignant tumor that arises independent of gestational events, making less than 0.6% of all ovarian germ cell tumors. Unlike the more common gestational choriocarcinoma, which is associated with pregnancy, non-gestational choriocarcinoma originates from germ cells within the ovary.
