The Versatile Roles of Type III Secretion Systems in Rhizobium-Legume Symbioses.

Annu Rev Microbiol

September 2022

Laboratoire des Symbioses Tropicales et Méditerranéennes (LSTM), IRD, Institut Agro, INRAE, Université de Montpellier, and CIRAD, Montpellier, France; email:

To suppress plant immunity and promote the intracellular infection required for fixing nitrogen for the benefit of their legume hosts, many rhizobia use type III secretion systems (T3SSs) that deliver effector proteins (T3Es) inside host cells. As reported for interactions between pathogens and host plants, the immune system of legume hosts and the cocktail of T3Es secreted by rhizobia determine the symbiotic outcome. If they remain undetected, T3Es may reduce plant immunity and thus promote infection of legumes by rhizobia.

African horse sickness virus (AHSV) is an Orbivirus within the Reoviridae family, spread by Culicoides species of midges, which infects equids with high mortality, particularly in horses and has a considerable impact on the equine industry. In order to control the disease, we previously described Entry Competent Replication Abortive (ECRA) virus strains for each of the nine distinct AHSV serotypes and demonstrated their potential as vaccines, first in type I interferon receptor (IFNAR-/-) knockout mice, and then in ponies. In this report we have investigated whether or not a combination ECRA vaccine comprising nine vaccine strains as two different cocktails is as efficient in ponies and the duration of the immunity triggered by ECRA vaccines.

Objective: To determine preliminary outcomes of targeted headache treatments provided at a novel outpatient acute care pediatric headache treatment center.

Background: Limitations exist in acute management of pediatric headaches, including inadequate access to specialty headache therapies and headache specialists in acute settings, variable success of emergency room treatments, and omission of comfort measures. An outpatient acute headache care clinic (the "Headache Treatment Center") was strategically initiated at a Midwestern pediatric academic hospital to provide acute and targeted headache therapies for children with active headaches.
